This 1920's layout of Manderston remained unchanged since its early years with signalling equipment most probably being McKenzie & Holland. In 1919 when newer Main line was built via Thornybush (Impushini) & Ashburton, traffic was normally split over the 2 lines during the closed period of station working at night, with Up Traffic passing through Manderston, and Down traffic passing through Ashburton on the Newer Main Line. When the current New Main line was built from Umlaas Road to Pentrich in 1965, Manderston station permanently closed and became a simple Halt & Intersiding for sugarcane trains. With the withdrawal of suburban commuter services to Pietermaritzburg in 1988, this section of the Old Main Line was no longer needed, and the line was pulled up between Umlaas Road & Thornville in the early 1990's.
