The Art of the Sanctuary
The sanctuary is not only a place of faith, but also a place of art. The interior of the basilica is richly decorated with frescoes, paintings, sculptures, and stuccos, representing scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the mysteries of the rosary. The most precious treasure of the sanctuary is the original image of the Madonna del Pozzo (Madonna of the Well), which is displayed in a silver frame above the main altar. The image is a Byzantine-style icon, painted on wood, dating from the 13th or 14th century.
