Santuario di Fontanellato: A Place of Faith and Art

If you are looking for a spiritual and cultural destination in Italy, you might want to visit the Santuario di Fontanellato, a minor basilica dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Rosary. Located in the town of Fontanellato, in the province of Parma, this sanctuary is a place of devotion, history, and beauty.

    The History of the Sanctuary

The origin of the sanctuary dates back to the 16th century, when a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary was found in a well near the castle of Fontanellato. The image was venerated by the local people, who attributed many graces and miracles to it. In 1597, the Dominican friars built a small chapel to house the image, which soon became a popular pilgrimage site. The chapel was enlarged and embellished over the centuries, until it reached its current appearance in the 18th century. The sanctuary was elevated to the rank of minor basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1951.
