He was initiated into the Sikh faith by Sant Attar Singh Ji Reru Sahib, who blessed him with Amrit and gave him two principles: to be a firm believer of Atam Marg (the spiritual path) and to constantly practice and preach Nam (the divine name). He also met Sant Attar Singh Ji Mastuana Sahib, who was another great spiritual master of his time. After the demise of Sant Attar Singh Ji Reru Sahib, he moved to Rara Sahib with his companion Sant Kishen Singh Ji, where they started meditating in a small jungle. They would sit in samadhi (deep meditation) for hours starting from midnight, which made their health deteriorate. They were then taken to Delhi for treatment, where they recovered gradually.
Sant Baba Isher Singh Rara Sahib became famous for his divine kirtan (musical recitation of Gurbani) and his inspiring discourses on Sikh scriptures and history. He traveled extensively across India and abroad to spread the message of Sikhism and to awaken the masses to their spiritual heritage. He also established many gurudwaras, schools, colleges, hospitals, and other institutions for the welfare of the people. He was revered by people from all walks of life, including rulers and kings. He had a very kind and compassionate personality and he helped many people in their spiritual and worldly problems. He also performed many miracles by the grace of God.
He left his mortal body on 26th August 1975 at Nanaksar Thath Isher Darbar in Ludhiana. His samadhi (memorial) is located at Gurdwara Karamsar Rara Sahib, where thousands of devotees pay their respects every day. His legacy is carried on by his successor Sant Baba Kishen Singh Ji Rara Sahib, who is also a great spiritual master and preacher. His kirtan and discourses are available online for anyone who wants to listen to them and benefit from them. He is regarded as one of the greatest saints of Sikhism and a shining example of living in harmony with God's will.
