I am Sanjukta Mitra, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Economics at Iowa State University.
My research interests lie at the intersection of environmental, labor, health economics and applied microeconomics. I use quasi-experimental methods to study the costs and distributional consequences of environmental regulations and hazards.
In my job market paper, I examine a hidden cost of the Clean Air Act (CAA) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) regulation on workplace safety in the mining sector. I find that stricter NAAQS regulations in serious nonattainment areas increased workplace injuries by 3.7 and sever injuries by 0.972 per 100 full-time workers in the short run, disproportionately affecting vulnerable, less experienced workers. The findings highlight the tension between sustainable growth and just transition.
I am on the 2025–2026 job market.
