DESIGN RESEARCH LEAD

at VRT innovation

I am responsible for the design research approach of VRT’s innovation department, including (at this moment) 7 European H2020-funded projects, 3 Flemish imec.ICON, 2 Google DNI and several internal funded projects. These research projects span a broad range of topics that concern media and technology, including artificial intelligence, data and personalization, sustainability, internet of things and smart cities.

Thesis is entitled “Urban Visualization. Design Strategies for the Public Visualization of Urban Data”. This research was based on 5 exploratory design studies including augmenting street signage with hyperlocal data in Street Infographics, creating a novel type of interactive urban infrastructure in the Bicycle Barometer, and co-designing public displays for the visualization of debate on urban issues in Organicity’s experiment Public Like Display.

2010-2012

DESIGN RESEARCHER

Interactions, including research groups Social Spaces en Play&Game, MAD faculty, LUCA school of Arts, Genk.

Tasks involved in two design-oriented research projects, including 1) the UI design and evaluation of a multi-touch device for arts centre Z33, as part of the EFRO funded research project Creating Spaces. In particular, I was responsible for project management and UI design (partners: EDM, Z33 as main applicator, KHLIM)

2) responsibility for the set up, script and animated scenes of the serious game ‘The Latest Continent’, a proof of concept for EFRO funded research project GameHUB (partners: EDM, PHL as main applicator, KHLIM and Group T)

3) service design for Future Formers, project of Eland, funded by Stichting P&V, Provincie Limburg, which was a participative art and media installation with local youth. http://www.futureformers.be/

Teaching activities involved Audio-Visual Arts, course Communication & mediadesign (current name ‘interaction design’), MAD faculty, LUCA School of Arts Genk (parttime 40%).
