This half-day tutorial, developed within the framework of the EU-funded EUSAiR project, explores the critical role of regulatory sandboxes in developing trustworthy AI and fostering responsible AI innovation. Designed for both PhD students and experienced researchers in AI, policy, and regulatory affairs, the tutorial will equip participants with practical knowledge and tools to address the challenges of AI regulation and compliance in the context of EU implementation of AI Act. We will discuss processes, frameworks, and best practices for establishing and operating effective sandboxes, supported by real-world case studies and interactive discussions. The tutorial will demonstrate how regulatory sandboxes can help navigate the complexities of the EU AI Act, ensuring both innovation and compliance. Participants will gain valuable insights into how research on trustworthy AI and compliance can be experimented in regulatory sandboxes, facilitating the safe and responsible development of AI technologies.
The tutorial enhances understanding of how testing can support regulatory compliance in AI development, fosters networking, and provides actionable insights and competencies for implementing effective regulatory sandboxes.
Qualitative methods for evaluating sandbox effectiveness will be presented, supported by case studies from real-life pilots in the EUSAiR project. Discussions will focus on best practices and challenges.
