If you want premium audio tuning with a secure wingtip fit for side sleepers, choose Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170; if you need active noise cancellation and all-day battery life on the go, choose JLab Go Pop ANC.
• Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170: Offers superior sound quality tuned by AKG and a physical wingtip design that locks in securely for side sleepers, but lacks true active noise cancellation and has shorter total battery life compared to the JLab.
• JLab Go Pop ANC: Delivers impressive 27+ hours of total playtime with genuine Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and a compact, credit-card-sized case, though it relies solely on gel tips which may feel less stable for some during intense side-sleeping positions.
• The Verdict: The Samsung is the pick for audiophiles who prioritize sound fidelity and a locked-in physical seal, while the JLab wins for travelers and commuters needing silence and extended runtime without frequent charging.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170 are designed for listeners who treat music as a primary experience rather than just background noise. The defining feature here is the audio engineering; these buds are tuned by AKG, a name synonymous with professional audio standards. This tuning results in an optimized driver setup that delivers substantial bass without drowning out the mids, alongside a volume driver that expands your dynamic range. If you spend hours listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or complex music tracks, the clarity provided by this specific driver configuration makes a tangible difference in how you perceive the content. You get a wider range of sound that feels more immersive than standard budget earbuds.
For those concerned with stability, particularly when sleeping on their side, the physical design of the SM-R170 is a significant advantage. Unlike many competitors that rely entirely on friction from silicone tips, these come with three adjustable sizes of both ear tips and wingtips right from the box. The wingtip acts as an anchor, preventing the bud from twisting or falling out even when you shift positions in bed. This makes them one of the most reliable choices for anyone looking for in ear headphones for side sleepers who need a device that stays put without constant adjustment. The rounded tip shape further contributes to a comfortable, ergonomic seal that reduces pressure points over long listening sessions.

However, this product is not for everyone. The lack of Active Noise Cancellation means you will still hear ambient sounds like traffic or office chatter unless you rely on passive sound isolation. While the Ambient Aware mode allows you to control how much outside noise you let in—perfect for hearing flight announcements or coworkers—it does not actively cancel low-frequency rumbles like airplane engines or air conditioners. Additionally, the battery life, while decent at six hours per charge, falls short of the marathon endurance offered by other models in this price bracket. If your priority is a single day of uninterrupted use without ever opening the case, or if you strictly require silence in noisy environments, this might not be the perfect tool for your daily routine.
The JLab Go Pop ANC is built for the modern commuter and the busy traveler who demands silence and longevity. The headline feature here is the Active Noise Cancellation system, which offers three distinct modes: ANC On, ANC Off, and Be Aware. This flexibility allows you to completely block out the world when you need focus, or switch to "Be Aware" to let in critical environmental sounds without removing the earbuds. Whether you are on a noisy train, working in a loud coffee shop, or trying to sleep on a plane, the ability to digitally dampen background noise provides a level of peace that passive isolation alone cannot achieve. The MEMS microphones in each bud ensure that despite the heavy digital processing for noise control, your voice remains clear during calls.
Battery performance is where the JLab truly distinguishes itself for the user who hates plugging in devices constantly. Each earbud delivers over seven hours of solo playback, and the case adds another 20+ hours, bringing the total to nearly 28 hours of playtime. This is a massive leap forward compared to competitors that offer half that duration. For a full workday or a long international flight, you likely won't need to touch the charger until the trip is over. The fast-charge capability is equally impressive; a mere ten minutes of charging via the integrated USB-C cable gives you an hour of playback. The case itself is engineered for portability, being smaller than a credit card and featuring a built-in USB-C cable, meaning you can slip it into any pocket or bag without worrying about carrying a separate cord.
That said, the trade-off lies in the physical fit and audio customization. The JLab relies on three sets of gel eartips to create a seal. While this offers a soft, comfortable feel for many, it lacks the mechanical security of a wingtip. For heavy side sleepers, this means there is a higher risk of the earbud shifting or loosening if you press hard against a pillow, potentially breaking the seal and reducing bass response. Furthermore, while the 10mm drivers deliver clear, full-range audio across all content, they do not have the specific AKG tuning signature found in the Samsung. If you are an audio purist who wants every detail of a track pulled apart, the JLab might feel slightly more generic, though the app does allow you to adjust EQ presets to tailor the sound to your preference.
• Best for side sleepers seeking stability → Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170. The inclusion of adjustable wingtips provides a mechanical lock that prevents movement better than gel-only designs.
• Best for active noise cancellation → JLab Go Pop ANC. Only the JLab offers true ANC with three modes, whereas the Samsung only offers ambient awareness and passive isolation.
• Best for total battery life → JLab Go Pop ANC. With 27+ hours total, the JLab easily outlasts the Samsung's 13-hour combined capacity.
• Best for sound fidelity and tuning → Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170. The AKG tuning and dual-driver architecture offer a richer, more detailed audio profile.
• Best for travel convenience → JLab Go Pop ANC. The credit-card-sized case with a built-in USB-C cable is significantly easier to pack and carry.
• Best for quick top-ups → JLab Go Pop ANC. Ten minutes of charging yields one hour of playback, whereas the Samsung requires fifteen minutes for roughly 1.7 hours.
• Best for call clarity in wind/noise → JLab Go Pop ANC. The dedicated MEMS microphones in each bud are specifically noted for handling call quality in various environments.
• Best for water resistance during workouts → Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170. Both handle sweat, but the Samsung's splash-resistant technology is explicitly rated for spills and sweat, making it robust for intense exercise.
After weighing the specs and real-world applications, I would buy the Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170 if my primary concern was comfort and stability while lying down. The wingtip design is a game-changer for side sleepers, ensuring the device stays put without digging into the ear canal or falling out during the night. However, if I needed a device for daily commuting that could silence a noisy subway or keep me entertained through a long-haul flight without recharging, I would switch to the JLab Go Pop ANC. Ultimately, the Samsung wins on the specific front of physical comfort for sleepers, but the JLab wins on the broader utility of battery life and noise cancellation. In my opinion, the Samsung is the safer bet for the specific niche of best lightweight bone conduction headphones for side sleepers (though technically in-ear), because nothing beats a mechanical wingtip for staying power.
Yes, the Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170 are better suited for side sleepers due to their included wingtips that provide a secure, mechanical lock. The JLab Go Pop ANC uses gel tips which may shift more easily under the pressure of a pillow.
Yes, the JLab Go Pop ANC features true Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) with three modes, while the Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170 rely on passive isolation and an Ambient Aware mode that lets outside sound in rather than blocking it.
The JLab Go Pop ANC offers significantly longer battery life, providing up to 27+ hours of total playtime with the case compared to the Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170's 13-hour total.
Both products offer customization; the JLab Go Pop ANC includes a dedicated app for EQ presets and touch control mapping, while the Samsung Galaxy Buds SM-R170 offer sound tuning via the AKG profile and Android-specific ambient controls.
