How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.
If you want powerful active noise cancellation with a sealed, immersive in-ear fit for teens who mostly listen at home, on the bus or in class, choose Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro; if you need an open-ear design that keeps your ears free and adds real-time translation for travel, sport and study, choose GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds.
• Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro — biggest strength: Intelligent Active Noise Cancellation with four ambient levels, so you decide exactly how much of the outside world gets in, plus an 11-mm woofer and 6.5-mm tweeter for detailed sound.
• Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro — biggest trade-off: It's an in-ear, sealed design with a rated battery average life of 5 hours per charge, so long days mean docking it in the case.
• GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds — biggest strength: An open-ear hook design at 4.3 g per earpiece with IP68 water resistance and up to 96 hours of total playtime with the magnetic charging case.
• GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds — biggest trade-off: Because the ear stays open, you don't get the isolation an in-ear seal provides — that's the deliberate trade for safety and comfort.
• Who each pick is for: Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro for a teen who wants noise control and rich sound in a compact in-ear bud; GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds for a teen who wants awareness of surroundings, sweat-proof durability and translation features on the go.
The Galaxy Buds Pro is built around control. Its headline feature is Intelligent Active Noise Cancellation paired with voice detection — the buds notice when you start talking and switch over so you can hold a conversation without pulling anything out of your ears. On top of that sit four ambient levels, which is the part I'd point a teen toward first: instead of a simple on/off toggle for the outside world, you get a dial. Crack it open slightly to hear a teacher or a crossing signal; close it down to disappear into a playlist. That graduated approach is the whole reason this product exists in this comparison.
Sound hardware is genuinely serious for a bud this size. Samsung fits an 11-mm woofer and a 6.5-mm tweeter into each earpiece, running a 20 Hz – 20,000 Hz frequency range with 16-ohm impedance. In plain terms: a dedicated driver for low end and a dedicated driver for highs, rather than one driver trying to do everything. If your teen cares about bass that actually thumps and vocals that stay clean on top, that two-driver setup is the selling point. Call quality gets attention too — the design is meant to cut background noise so the voice comes through clearly, and a Voice Pickup Unit is part of the sensor array alongside an accelerometer, gyro, hall and proximity sensor.
GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds: Who It's For
GNZUQ takes the opposite philosophy: never block the ear at all. These are hook-style open-ear buds, 4.3 g per earpiece, built from a lightweight SMA memory material with a slim hook that the brand says fits comfortably over glasses. That last detail matters more than it sounds — teens who wear prescription glasses often find chunky ear hooks miserable, and a slim flexible hook solves a real daily problem. The open design also keeps you aware of traffic, teammates and people talking to you, which is exactly why this style has taken over running and cycling.
For sport, the spec sheet is strong. IP68 waterproofing covers sweat and rain, and the SMA hooks are rated to survive 60,000 bends without losing shape — a nod to the fact that ear hooks are usually the first thing to fail. If you're hunting for the best sweat resistant headphone for teens, this is the category where open-ear earns its keep: nothing is jammed into a sweaty ear canal, and moisture isn't trapped against the skin.
Then there's the feature that makes GNZUQ unusual: real-time AI translation across 198 languages with seven modes covering face-to-face conversation, recording, simultaneous interpretation, photo, text, video call and voice call. For a teen in a language class, on a trip, or chatting with friends abroad, that's a genuinely different product category — not just headphones. Audio uses a 14.2 mm Hi-Fi dynamic driver with three-band tuning and 360° surround processing, and four ENC noise-cancelling microphones handle voice pickup on calls. Note that this is Environmental Noise Cancellation on the mic side, not active noise cancellation in your ears — they are not the same thing, and the open design means you'll hear the room. Connectivity is Bluetooth 6.1 with a 15-meter range, auto power-on and auto pairing.
Battery is the headline: 10 hours per single-ear charge, a 5-minute quick charge for an hour of use, and up to 96 hours total with the magnetic charging case, plus an LED display showing the remaining level. I'd recommend GNZUQ for a teen who runs, cycles, wears glasses, travels, or wants translation built in — and suggest they look elsewhere if deep isolation and thumping bass are the priority.

• Best for battery life → GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds. 10 hours per charge and up to 96 hours with the case, versus 5 hours average on the Samsung buds.
• Best sweat resistant headphone for teens → GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds. IP68 plus 60,000-bend SMA hooks is built for daily training.

• Best for glasses wearers → GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds. The slim hook is specifically designed to sit over frames.
• Best wireless bluetooth earbuds for teens who want awareness → GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds. Open-ear means you never lose track of your surroundings.
For most teens I'd pick the GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds. The reasoning is practical, not sentimental: 10 hours per charge stretching to 96 with the case, IP68 sweat protection, hooks rated for 60,000 bends, a design that plays nice with glasses, and translation across 198 languages covers more of a teenager's actual week — practice, commute, travel, study — than any single audio feature. The Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro is the better pure listening machine, and if your teen wants active noise cancellation and a two-driver sound signature, it wins that fight clearly. But if they need one pair to survive sport, school and a trip abroad, in my opinion GNZUQ is the smarter buy. Check the current price on Amazon for both before deciding.
what is ambient mode on earbuds
Ambient mode is a setting that pipes outside sound into your ears through the earbuds' microphones, so you can hear traffic, announcements or someone talking without removing them. On the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro this is handled through four selectable ambient levels, letting you dial in how much of the world gets through instead of just toggling it on or off.

In short, it's awareness on demand — you keep your buds in but stay connected to the room around you. That makes it useful for crossing streets, hearing a teacher or holding a quick conversation. The Galaxy Buds Pro gives you graded control over it; GNZUQ gives it to you by design.
Do open-ear earbuds have noise cancellation?
No, and that's the key distinction here. The GNZUQ Open Ear Earbuds list Environmental Noise Cancellation, which cleans up background sound on your microphone during calls — it does not silence the world in your ears. If you want active noise cancellation, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro is the one that offers it.
