As you probably already know, Always On Display shows important information on your Galaxy device's screen when it's turned off. However, there are a couple settings and display mode options that you can adjust.


Show always: This setting will display AOD continuously whenever your phone screen is off. Use this setting if you don't want to tap anything to see your AOD. Keep in mind that this setting will use more battery power.

Show as scheduled: This setting shows your AOD based on a set schedule. Use this setting if you want AOD to display at certain times. For example, you can set your AOD to only display during your work day and turn off while you're asleep. This setting will reduce AOD's battery consumption.

Auto brightness: This setting is on by default and automatically adjusts the brightness level of your AOD. To manually control the brightness level, tap the switch next to Auto brightness to turn it off. Then, adjust the slider to set your desired brightness level. Alternatively, you can double tap the clock when your AOD displays, and then adjust the brightness level there.


Note: The fingerprint icon on AOD screen is always shown like a clock or notification if you set AOD as "Shown always". It makes you easily find the position of the fingerprint sensor on the AOD screen without turning the screen on.

I have an issue with my S22 Ultra Exynos. I charge the phone overnight on a wireless charging station. Since always on display is turned on and set to always show, I can check the time in case I wake up.

Sometimes I wake up and find the screen empty without AOD. Unlocking the phone results in a brief flash and after then the always on display works again. The issue does not happen every night and so far hasn't occurred during the day when the phone is unlocked regularly.

Does anyone know how to change the option where if you put your phone to charge and the always on display also shows while your charging but does anyone know how to change it to tap show only while charging ? Or its permanent like that and if you can change it let me know ?

Go to application called Routines. Download that. Turn on AOD while charging. Turn off AOD notification in your display settings. That should do it. Will only turn on while charging. Let me know outcome.

Yes a scheduled time, but using Routine will only display when his phone charges. He can go into display mode and select tap to show and AOD screen will show for 10 seconds. As for the results of our display brightness tests, the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the Xiaomi 12S Ultra were the brightest among the four devices by quite a large margin. But the difference is major when it comes to how the screen is lit up. Indeed, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max lights up the full screen, while the Samsung and the Google devices only light the pictogram. The reason why the Xiaomi 12S Ultra has a very high maximum and average brightness is that it shows a very bright symbol in always-on mode, in addition to the time of the day.

Another important point is that all these devices use OLED screen technology, which is more energy efficient because black areas of the display, for example, do not consume any power. In contrast, LCD technology always consumes energy, which is why it is not compatible with always-on mode. Therefore, it is expected that brighter devices have higher consumption. Note that we were unable to run specific measurements on the variable refresh rate since the luminance is really low in auto mode. But the refresh rate might have an impact on battery life depending on the way it has been set by each manufacturer.

Concluding our measurements, we observed that even though the iPhone provided a bright screen on average, its power consumption was the lowest, indicating that the Apple engineers did a very good job of optimizing efficiency. The Google and the Samsung showed similar power consumptions, but with an always-on screen experience that was a lot less demanding: Only small parts of the screen were lit, and the maximum brightness was kept low. They both showed similar discharge currents as the iPhone, while displaying a much dimmer screen.
