If you want a closed-back, high-isolation headset with plush memory foam comfort for long call center shifts, choose SAMSON SR970; if you need an open-back design that delivers natural soundstage and detailed vocals for home listening, choose GRADO Classic Series SR80.
• SAMSON SR970: Strengths include maximum acoustic isolation via its closed-back design and plush velour ear cups perfect for extended wear; the trade-off is it lacks the airy soundstage of open designs, making it better for noisy environments than quiet studios. This pick is for professionals who need to block out distractions or work in shared spaces.
• GRADO Classic Series SR80: Strengths feature a lively, engaging signature sound with excellent instrument separation due to its open-back construction; the trade-off is zero noise isolation, meaning sound leaks in and out, which ruins privacy in busy offices. This pick is for audiophiles who prioritize sonic accuracy and detail over isolation.
• Best for Call Center: The SAMSON SR970 is the only logical choice here because its closed design prevents your voice from echoing into others' microphones while blocking office chatter.
The SAMSON SR970 is built around the concept of professional isolation. Its closed-back architecture is not just a stylistic choice; it is a functional barrier designed to keep external noise out and internal audio contained. For anyone working in a bustling environment, this feature is non-negotiable. The 50mm premium drivers deliver a frequency response ranging from 10Hz to 25kHz, ensuring that every nuance in a recording or broadcast is captured with exceptional clarity. This wide dynamic range means you won't miss the subtle bass frequencies or the crisp highs essential for critical monitoring.
Comfort is another pillar of the SR970's design philosophy. The unit features plush velour over-ear driver cups that wrap around the ear rather than pressing against it. This specific material choice suggests a focus on long-term wearability, addressing the common issue of ear fatigue during marathon sessions. Combined with a wide, self-adjusting headband, the design aims to provide a secure fit without the pinching often associated with rigid plastic bands. If you are looking for memory foam ear cushions headphones for call center use, the soft padding here offers a distinct advantage over harder materials found in cheaper alternatives.

However, this model is not for everyone. Because it is wired and relies on a 3.5mm jack with a gold-plated adapter included, it requires a physical connection to your device. While the 32-ohm impedance makes it highly efficient and easy to drive even from mobile devices, it does not offer the freedom of wireless movement. Furthermore, the closed nature of the ear cups creates a sealed environment that some users might find too warm after several hours. If you value the ability to hear the room around you while you listen, this isolation will feel like a wall. It is strictly for those who need to focus entirely on the audio stream without distraction.
The GRADO Classic Series SR80 takes a completely different approach by embracing an open-back design. This construction allows air and sound to pass freely through the ear cups, creating a listening experience that feels spacious and natural. Unlike the isolated bubble of the SR970, the SR80 lets the music breathe. This results in improved instrument separation and a more accurate representation of how sound exists in a real room. For listeners who want to feel like they are sitting in the same room as the musicians, this open-air presentation is unmatched. The "lively" sound profile brings vocals forward with energy, making genres like jazz, classical, and acoustic rock particularly engaging.
Grado has spent decades refining this sound signature, and the SR80 reflects a commitment to immediate, uncolored audio reproduction. The lightweight build is a key factor in its appeal for home use. Since the enclosure material is primarily plastic, the weight is minimized, reducing strain on the head during long sessions. The cable flexibility has also been improved compared to older models, preventing the tangle issues that often plague wired headphones. This makes the SR80 an ideal companion for a dedicated listening chair where you can settle in and enjoy high-fidelity audio without interruption. It is designed specifically for home listening environments where you have control over the acoustics and do not need to worry about disturbing others.
That said, the open-back design comes with significant limitations regarding usage context. There is no noise control provided; the SR80 cannot isolate you from the world, nor can it keep your audio private. In a noisy office or a shared living space, you will hear everything happening around you, and people nearby will hear exactly what you are hearing. This makes it unsuitable for sweatproof head phones for call center applications or any scenario requiring privacy. Additionally, the frequency range tops out at 20,000 Hz, slightly less than the SR970's 25,000 Hz extension, though this difference is often negligible for standard music consumption. It is a tool for the purist who values sound quality above all else and has a quiet, private space to enjoy it.
• Best for Noise Isolation: SAMSON SR970 wins decisively. Its closed-back design physically blocks outside noise, making it the superior choice for noisy offices or travel.
• Best for Soundstage and Detail: GRADO Classic Series SR80 takes the lead. The open-back design creates a wider, more natural soundstage that separates instruments with greater precision.
• Best for Long-Term Comfort: Both excel, but in different ways. SAMSON offers plush velour cups for softness, while GRADO uses a lightweight frame to reduce pressure; choose based on whether you prefer cushioned softness or light weight.
• Best for Call Center Use: SAMSON SR970 is the clear winner. The closed design ensures your microphone does not pick up background noise, and it protects your ears from office distractions.
• Best for Home Audiophile Listening: GRADO Classic Series SR80 is the choice. It delivers the "engaging" and "immediate" sound that enthusiasts seek in a dedicated listening room.
• Driver Size and Frequency Range: SAMSON SR970 features larger 50mm drivers and a broader range (10Hz–25kHz), potentially offering more bass extension and ultra-high detail.
• Portability and Connectivity: Both are wired with 3.5mm jacks and include 1/4" adapters, but SAMSON's closed design makes it slightly more versatile for public transport, whereas GRADO is best kept at home.
• Brand Heritage: GRADO emphasizes its family-owned history since 1953 and Brooklyn roots, appealing to those who value artisanal craftsmanship and legacy.
After weighing the specifications and intended use cases, I would personally buy the SAMSON SR970. While the GRADO SR80 offers a beautiful, natural sound, its lack of isolation makes it impractical for modern work environments. The SAMSON SR970 provides the necessary acoustic seal for professional tasks, combining that isolation with comfortable velour padding that supports long hours. If you are buying a best bluetooth headset for call center alternative (though these are wired), the SR970's closed design is the closest functional match to what is actually required for productivity. It balances technical performance with practical utility in a way the open-back SR80 simply cannot.
Yes, the SAMSON SR970 is excellent for noisy offices due to its closed-back design which isolates sound. The GRADO SR80 is not suitable as it leaks sound and lets in ambient noise.
No, both models are efficient enough to be driven directly from standard devices. The SAMSON SR970 has a low 32-ohm impedance, and the GRADO SR80 sits at 38 ohms, making them compatible with mobile phones and laptops without extra hardware.
The SAMSON SR970 likely offers deeper bass due to its larger 50mm drivers and extended low-frequency response down to 10Hz. The GRADO SR80 focuses on mid-range clarity and vocal presence rather than heavy bass impact.
It is not recommended. The open-back design means your microphone will pick up room noise, and people nearby will hear your conversation. The SAMSON SR970 is far better for privacy and clarity in calls.
