Monselice, Italy
Hi/ Ahoj/ Ciao/Hallo/नमस्ते,
My name is Sambit Shome. Currently, I am working as a scientific assistant at ETH Zurich. Previously, I was a double-master graduate student at the University of Georgia-Athens Campus. Double masters’ is a graduate program between University of Georgia, USA, and University of Padova, Italy. I spent the first year of my graduate program in Italy and then moved to US to complete my coursework and start my thesis work. Finally, after the completion of my program, I was awarded two masters’ degree: Masters in Crop and Soil Sciences from University of Georgia and Masters in Sustainable Agriculture, from University of Padova.
I was born in Kolkata, India. I did my schooling from W.W.A Cossipore English School. After, I graduated high school, I left Kolkata and shifted to Punjab, India to follow my passion of studying agriculture. I started my Bachelors' in Agriculture (Hons.) from Lovely Professional University (ICAR: Indian Council of Agriculture Research Accredited). Little did I know that this place will change my life for ever. Days at my Bachelor university were going well and I was grasping up every possible knowledge to agriculture like a honey bee collecting nectar.
The final moment came when after my 6th semester exams, I got a call from the 'Office of International affairs' stating that based on my CV, grades and recommendations from my professors I have been chosen for a study abroad program. I will be spending one semester at Mendel University, Czech Republic.
The semester at Mendel, was fun, intense and I met people all over the world. It was during this time that on seeing my interest in Sustainable Agriculture, one of my classmates from University of Padova also there on Erasmus Exchange Prog., recommended me to apply for the masters there.
I was skeptical to apply as doing a degree prog. from abroad requires a lot of money and surely I couldn't self fund myself.
But,
I still applied and got through. Now the question was of funds.
Viola,
One month later, I got to know that I have been granted the most prestigious scholarship from the University of Padova, which is given to only 42 people all over the world. I was a Padova Excellence International Scholar. My joy knew no bounds.
Fast forward,
After one semester at University of Padova (UniPD), the call for dual degree came out. I was curious as what will be two masters degree look like. I applied and by GOD's and my parents blessing I made it through the selection. I will be the first in my family to have a dual masters' degree and the first in my family to ever take up agriculture as a career path.
To whoever reading this, I request you to take up a career that you are interested in. You will flourish with flying colors always. Believe in yourself!
Best regards,
Sambit (Sammy)

United States was very welcoming to me. I was welcomed with open arms. I liked the working culture here. Everything is faraway from each other and with less public transport. To make my commute easier, I bought a bicycle.
But,
On a fateful day while I was biking down to campus someone hit me with their car and ran away. Leaving me with a broken elbow, 5 stiches on my forehead and a completely peeled off skin from left side of my face. All this happened on the 5th day in the US.
The climax, is still left.
One week later. I get a message that there is some problem in my immigration status in Italy and I need to go back for a week. With the support of everyone from UGA , I went back with the broken hand, scars and still in trauma of the accident.
Long story short, It was a mistake on their part and I haven't had to fly back had they replied me on time. Meanwhile, I developed some differences with my Italian landlord and had to leave the apartment with no where to go. My friend from Germany helped me and I stayed at there place until I flew back.
Seeing, I am going through a lot I dropped my courses in fall.
Home till I graduate
