For this project, I wanted to see if my neighborhood could sustain a new ice cream parlor.
I researched information about local businesses using Data Axle's Reference Solutions database through my local library. I was able to gather information about sales volume, business address, and location size. Using a Google Sheets add-on called GeoCode, I was able to add longitude and latitude for each business using their street address.
I examined the sales volumes of all restaurants within a 2 mile radius of my desired location and all ice cream parlors within a 5 mile radius. Because I was able to obtain the SIC code for each business, I could also examine the sales volume based on type of restaurant to see which had the highest sales volume in each category.
What did I learn? Water ice shops have a higher sales volume than ice cream parlors. Maybe I need to reconsider my plan...
