Christ Resurrection

(1 Cor. 15:20-23, 35-44)

I. Christ’s Resurrection Is Our Guarantee That What He Said is True

A. It’s our guarantee that he truly is the Son of God (John 1:1, 14; 17:1-5).

    1. This was the claim of Jesus that caused the greatest outrage among the religious leaders of the day.

    2. This is the claim that distinguishes Jesus from the founders of all other religions.

    3. Jesus proved the validity of his claim by his resurrection.

B. It’s our guarantee that he’s coming again (John 14:1-4, 28-29).

    1. Jesus repeatedly told his disciples that he would be killed and then raise from the dead (John 7:33-34; 12:31-33; 16:16-17).

    2. Jesus knew that the disciples would not understand his predictions until after the resurrection (John 14:28-29).

    3. Our sharing in the Lord’s Supper is an expression of our faith that Jesus indeed is coming again (Matt. 26:29; 1 Cor. 11:26).

II. Christ’s Resurrection Is Our Guarantee That Jesus Is With Us (Matt. 28:20)

A. Jesus is with us through the presence of the Holy Spirit (John 16:7).

    1. Jesus said it was necessary for him to leave in order for the Spirit to come.

    2. The word translated “Counselor” in the NIV is translated “Comforter” in the KJV.

    3. The Greek word is parakletos, which literally means “one who is called to someone’s side.”

    4. The presence of the Holy Spirit is God’s seal, guaranteeing what is to come (2 Cor. 1:22).

B. Jesus is with us in our worship (Matt. 18:20).

    1. We are not just gathering in Jesus’ name; we are gathering in his presence.

    2. The Bible emphasizes the need for corporate worship in the presence of the Lord (Heb. 10:25).

C. Jesus is with us in our trials (Rom. 8:35-39).

    1. We can know this not because of how we feel, but because of what Jesus promised.

    2. We can trust what Jesus promised because he is alive today to fulfill it.

III. Christ’s Resurrection Is Our Guarantee That We Also Will Be Resurrected (1 Cor. 15)

A. Jesus is the “firstfruits” (1 Cor. 15:20-23).

    1. The firstfruits came prior to the main harvest.

    2. The firstfruits were also an assurance that the rest of the harvest was coming.

    3. Jesus preceded us in his bodily resurrection and he is also the guarantee of our resurrection at his second coming.

B. Like Jesus, we will receive a resurrected body (1 John 3:2-3; 1 Cor. 15:35-44).

    1. Our new body will be imperishable (1 Cor. 15:42).

    2. Our new body will be spiritual (1 Cor. 15:44).

    3. This does not mean our resurrected body will not have a physical form; but it will not be limited by current laws of nature. Jesus had a physical body after his resurrection (Luke 24:36-43), yet his body was perfect and eternal.

C. Jesus’ resurrection is a guarantee of our eternity (Eph. 1:14).

    1. The Holy Spirit is God’s deposit in our lives.

    2. This deposit guarantees our inheritance.
