Apple reported on Nov. 3 that the iPhone, which is its primary revenue generator, saw an increase in sales during the September quarter and is expected to continue this trend in the last three months of 2023.

The company has capitalized on the growing demand for smartphones in India by focusing on the premium segment and introducing attractive financing offers, global research firm Counterpoint said when announcing these Indian sales figures on Nov. 1.

Sales of Apple's iPhone 15 models in their first 17 days are down 4.5% in China versus last year, according to an estimate from Counterpoint Research. Unit sales of the higher-end Pro Max and Pro are down 14% and 11% versus last year, according to the estimate.

It's a tough smartphone market for everyone. Smartphones sales are down around the world, on pace for the lowest shipment total in a decade, and they're specifically down in China because of macroeconomic concerns.

Investors are eager to see Apple return to growth this holiday season after three-straight quarters of declining overall sales. Data points from Apple officials in July point to falling growth yet again in the quarter ending Sept. 30.

Apple will reveal its September quarter results Nov. 2, and executives will likely give some data points about how the holiday quarter is firming up, and whether it's returning to growth. The holiday season is Apple's busiest of the year, and the first full quarter to include iPhone 15 sales. The September quarter only included a few days where the latest iPhones were sold.

But that's at odds with Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring, who said the bank is slashing its December quarter estimates and target price for the stock because it believes that limited supply will push some iPhone sales to the first quarter of 2024.

Adding to the concern among investors is that Apple's other products won't make up any iPhone shortfall. Apple's Mac and iPad lineups haven't gotten a major update yet this year. New models usually stoke demand, and the Chinese iPad announced this week was a very minor update. TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says MacBook sales could crater as much as 30% in 2023 versus last year.

Although Apple has diversified its product line, iPhone remains to be the money maker for Apple. In 2021, Apple generated $192 billion in revenue from the sales of iPhones, an increase of nearly 40% as compared to the revenue of $137 billion in 2020.

The company reported that sales of its most important product, the iPhone, fell more than 8%, to nearly $65.8 billion. The reason, Apple said, included several factors, such as the fluctuating price of the US dollar across the world and especially strong sales of its products in the prior year. But the real crunch came from COVID-19 shutdowns late last year across the Chinese manufacturing centers Apple relies on. The results led to protests in China, and supply shortages for Apple's iPhones, in particular its $999 iPhone 14 Pro series.

One reason for that approach could be that Apple's iPhone division wasn't the only product segment facing challenges. Its Mac computer team, including its MacBook laptops, reported that sales fell nearly 29%, to $7.7 billion. The company's wearables and accessories business also notched sales that dropped, more than 8%, to about $13.5 billion, despite Apple having introduced a new extreme sports-focused $799 Apple Watch Ultra and revamped second-generation AirPods Pro earbuds.

Apple has raised the starting price on just one of its models. The iPhone 15 Pro Max now starts at $1,199 vs. $1,099 for its predecessor last year (though it now has double the storage capacity). As a result, the company may not enjoy much of a bump in the average sales price (ASP). It is worth noting that a nice bump in Apple's iPhone ASP has helped the company defy the slowdown in the smartphone market to some extent.

In all, Apple's new iPhones may not turn out to be a runaway success and the stock could remain under pressure in the final quarter of the year if the challenges discussed above indeed bog down the sales of the new devices. More importantly, a drop in iPhone sales would weigh on Apple's overall financial performance considering the influence of this product on its top and bottom lines.

Analysts are expecting Apple's revenue to decline almost 3% in the ongoing fiscal year to $383 billion. Its performance is expected to improve slightly in fiscal 2024 with a 6% revenue jump. But that would depend a lot on how the company's new iPhone performs at the sales counters and if it can produce enough of them.

So, even though sales of the new iPhones may get off to a rough start if Apple cannot produce enough of them, there is enough evidence that points toward healthy demand for the company's smartphones in the future. Now, investors may be tempted to book profits in this tech stock as its most popular product may not be able to pull out of the rut it is in, at least in the short run, but that could open a buying opportunity for savvy investors looking to set their portfolios up for long-term gains.

In a report issued in February, CIPA documented the continued drop in digital camera sales. In 2021, total shipments of digital cameras fell 6 percent, the group said in a press release. This latest drop, however, came after years of decreasing sales.

Although there was a small increase in 2017, overall digital camera sales have decreased each year since 2018, CIPA said. The decreases were mainly caused by drops in shipments of digital cameras that have built-in lenses, notes market research company Statista.

Business research company Research and Markets predicts worldwide sales are expected to keep dropping sharply. It noted in a report in February that the world market for digital cameras was estimated at 8.4 million devices in 2020. It says the market is expected to shrink to 1.2 million by 2026. The biggest drop is predicted for digital cameras with built-in lenses.

The continuing sales drops demonstrate the huge influence smartphones have had throughout the camera industry. But this does not mean that professional photographers never use smartphones to capture pictures.

Apple (AAPL) stock rose Monday amid reports that iPhone 15 sales remain strong and are largely on par with year-ago sales trends for the iPhone 14 series. Lead times from order to delivery of high-end Pro models have shortened as supply begins to catch up with demand, analysts said.

Chatterjee said his firm's global product availability tracker shows that iPhone 15 delivery lead times have moderated after two weeks of sales. That is "very typical for the lead-time trajectory when compared to prior years," he said.

Early pre-order data was positive, according to Tianfeng International Securities tech analyst Kuo Ming-chi. He forecasts that sales of the device will boost Apple's profit and revenue growth in Q4 2023. iPhone 15 Pro Max sales are likely to be strong, though sales of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models are likely to miss expectations, says Kuo.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the global smartphone market, Q2 2023 brought forth a monumental shift that caught the attention of tech enthusiasts and industry experts alike. Amidst a backdrop of changing consumer preferences and economic dynamics, China emerged as the unexpected frontrunner, dethroning the USA to become the largest single country for iPhone sales in this quarter. Let's delve into the details of this significant development and the factors that contributed to this remarkable turnaround.

However, it was China that played a pivotal role in shaping the narrative of this quarter's iPhone sales. While Apple's performance in China remained steady, the country's significance in the iPhone story took an unprecedented turn.

In an unexpected twist, China overtook the USA to clinch the title of the largest single country for iPhone sales in Q2 2023. This historic moment marked the first time China surpassed the USA in terms of iPhone sales volume. China's share of the iPhone market surged to an impressive 24%, overshadowing the USA's 21% share.

As the dust settles on Q2 2023, one thing is abundantly clear: the world of smartphones is in a state of flux. Samsung's dominance and Apple's resilience set the stage for a riveting narrative of adaptation and innovation. Amidst these stories, China's ascendancy to the forefront of iPhone sales stands out as a symbol of the shifting tides in the global market.

An extra $1bn in services revenue - from the App Store, iCloud, advertising, payment services parts of the business - offset large drops in Mac and iPad sales but overall revenues declined for the fourth three month period in a row.
