Introduction
Salah Companion ("we", "our", or "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use our mobile application.
Information We Collect
Location Data: The app requests your device location to calculate accurate prayer times and Qibla direction. Location is processed on your device where possible. Coordinates may be sent to the third-party services listed below for prayer times and city/country lookup. Wikimedia receives only the resulting city/country image-search terms, not raw GPS coordinates. Location data is not sent to our own servers.
Local Storage: The app stores your preferences, reading progress, achievements, fasting logs, bookmarks, and settings locally on your device using SharedPreferences.
Usage Analytics & Diagnostics: The app stores basic feature usage counters, a limited history of up to 120 recent sanitized app events (such as the event name and time), and a size-limited, sanitized error log locally in its private on-device storage. The current release contains no remote crash-reporting SDK and uploads no crash report. Android deletes this local diagnostic data when the app is uninstalled. If Firebase Crashlytics is enabled in a future reviewed release, it may receive stack traces, relevant app state and device metadata, a Crashlytics installation UUID, a Firebase installation ID, and sanitized screen/feature breadcrumbs. Firebase currently states that this Crashlytics data is kept for 90 days before removal begins. This policy and the Play Data safety form will be updated before that binary is published. Diagnostics are used only for reliability, never for ads.
Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect personal identification information (name, email, phone number)
- We do not track your browsing behavior
- We do not use advertising identifiers
- We do not use advertising SDKs or show ads
- We do not sell user data
- We do not require an account, name, email address, or phone number to use the app
Third-Party Services
The app connects to the following external services:
- Aladhan API (aladhan.com) — to fetch prayer times based on your coordinates and calculation method. Only latitude, longitude, and prayer calculation parameters are sent; no personal identifiers.
- Nominatim / OpenStreetMap — for reverse geocoding (converting coordinates to city/country names). Only coordinates are sent.
- Wikimedia Commons — to resolve city/country mosque header images while Home is active. Only metadata-verified CC0, Public Domain, CC BY, or CC BY-SA images are shown; the header displays the author and licence with a link to the exact Commons source page. Offline bundled mosque images remain available as fallbacks.
- Metal price APIs — to fetch current gold/silver prices for Zakat calculation. No personal data is sent.
- Frankfurter (api.frankfurter.dev) — to fetch daily USD exchange rates for the Zakat currency converter. Only requested ISO currency codes are sent; no personal data is sent.
- EveryAyah / QuranicAudio (everyayah.com and quranicaudio.com) — to stream Quran recitation audio when you choose to play an ayah. Only the selected reciter and surah/ayah number are requested; no personal data is sent.
- HadeethEnc.com — to download, at your request, the official translated and explained hadith collection in the language you choose. Only the language code and requested versioned export file are sent; no account data or app content is uploaded.
- Connectivity check (Google generate_204) — a lightweight request to clients3.google.com/generate_204 to detect whether the device is online before other network calls. No personal data is sent.
- Device geocoder (Android) — on Android, converting coordinates to a city/country name and resolving a manually entered place name use the device's built-in geocoding service (provided by Google on most devices). Coordinates, or the place name you type, are sent.
- Firebase Crashlytics — inactive in the current release. If configured in a future release, stack traces, relevant app/device state, installation identifiers, and sanitized breadcrumbs may be sent for reliability monitoring. Firebase states that Crashlytics crash data and associated identifiers are retained for 90 days before removal begins.
Data Storage
Most app data (settings, bookmarks, achievements, reading progress, fasting logs, local analytics counters, and optional HadeethEnc collections) is stored locally on your device. If you explicitly export a JSON backup, it leaves the app only through the destination you choose in Android's share sheet. If you uninstall the app, local app data is deleted by the operating system, but any JSON backup exported elsewhere remains under your control. Salah Companion has no account system or developer database. Third-party providers control data processed by the network requests described above; contact support for privacy questions.
Children's Privacy
Salah Companion is intended for users aged 13 and over and is not designed for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Location data is handled only as described in this policy and only after permission is granted. The app contains no ads, no in-app purchases, and no social features.
Permissions
- Location: Required for prayer times and Qibla direction calculation while using the app
- Internet: Used for prayer times, geocoding, mosque header images while Home is active, metal prices, exchange rates, Quran audio, optional HadeethEnc downloads, and connectivity checks. The current release does not upload diagnostics.
- Notifications: Optional, used for prayer time reminders and adhan alerts
- Exact alarms: Used only for time-sensitive prayer and Adhan alerts; the app falls back to standard notifications when exact alarms are unavailable
- Do Not Disturb access: Optional. Used only to restore your previous sound mode if an earlier version's prayer auto-silent feature left Do Not Disturb on; revocable in Android settings
- Vibration: Optional, used for haptic feedback in Tasbih counter

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
