Following the Death of Emily Couric, VA's SD 25 opened up for a special election which saw Bath County Democratic Delegate, and almost House of Delegates Democratic Leader Creigh Deeds best Albemarle GOP Candidate Jane Maddux to hold the 25th Senate District for Democrats,
preserving the size of the Democrats 22-18 seat Minority circa the Beginning of Mark Warner’s term as Governor in 2002.
Deeds's win is attributable to a combination of his ten year incumbency as a delegate in the more conservative western half of the district—being endorsed by the NRA, as well as the late Senator's team working the Eastern half of the district to help Deeds get elected.
This came despite strong fundraising numbers from Maddux, who likewise lost to the late senator Couric in a landslide in 1999.
Of note, the special election was held for the district whose lines were approved for the 2004-2012 sessions of the virginia legislature, rather than the 1990s version of the district.
