The First Round of the San Antonio Mayoral Election, a contest which saw both frm TX-23rd CD Candidate/Under Secretary of the Air Force Gina Ortiz Jones and frm TX Secretary of State Rolando Pablos advance to the second round created a contest between the San Antonio Left, repped by Ortiz Jones and the TX GOP that some observers believe threatens to allow for the Conservatives to win the San Antonio Mayoral office for the first time since 1995
The 2025 San Antonio Mayoral Election, a contest between former Undersecretary of the Air Force/TX-23rd CD candidate Gina Ortiz-Jones, and Former Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos saw Ortiz-Jones win in this Harris+17% City; becoming its first openly LGBTQ+ mayor
The fight was billed between a Rebuke or support for Incumbent TX Governor Greg Abbot, with Ortiz Jones arguing that a victory for her over “Abbot’s puppet”Pablos would send a clear message to the governor; Pablos was not keen to dispel the notion, believing it helped him
Instead, he attacked Ortiz-Jones by claiming that her use of her Maternal name was intended to ‘trick’ San Antonians into believing she was a real Latino—with him arguing that she wasn’t “one of us”, & campaigned to Latinos on voting “for the real thing” (Ortiz-Jones is Filipina)
In the end, despite the attacks, & a Greg Abbot-aligned Super PAC spending over $1.35 Million supporting Pueblos/Attacking Ortiz-Jones—far outpacing her supporter’s $160K—Ortiz-Jones won, preventing a conservative from winning San Antonio’s mayoralty; something last done in 1995.
