The 2024 Ponce V PNP Senate Primary, a contest between the former Mayor of Adjuntas' daughter Jamie Barlucea, former HD-25 Representative Jackie Rodriguez, frm Ponce V Senator Nelson Cruz and first time candidate Javier Molina resulted in a comfortable and close fought win for Barlucea and Rodriguez respectively
A testament to Local support, for the most part, all candidates did well in their home areas or where there was significant institutional support in their favor
Here, Barlucea did best in her home town of Adjuntas, where her father was mayor, extending that to the rest of the district through instititutional connections, and allowing her to win with 31% of the vote (~63% of cast Ballots)
Likewise, Runner up Jackie Rodriguez, based in Ponce with connections throughout the Southwest of the district—as also seen in the 2021 House At-Large Primary—came in second because of her strength in her former HD as well as Peñuelas, Guayanilla, Juana Díaz and Ciales
Nelson Cruz—who ended up losing—ended up getting close because of his performance in HD-21, where tying himself closely to Jenniffer González, in addition to being the only candidate with connections here due to his prior stint as Senator likely helped him.
However, Cruz (who was a former Mayoral Candidate and PNP head here) lost Peñuelas to Rodriguez, in a slightly embarasing loss for him
Lastly, Javier Molina was able to get close due to major institutional support from the PNP in Utuado, receiving multiple endorsements from electeds and former electeds there allowing him to win the municipality overall, and romp amongst those fighting for second place.
