The current NY-16th Primary results, In a Rout Popular incumbent Westchester County Executive beat Incumbent Representative Jamaal Bowman in a contest centered around each other Bona fides as Democratic Party Members,
While Latimer benefited significantly from Outside Spending by Pro-Israel Groups such as AIPAC—who were targeting Bowman for his vociferous championing of the Palestinian Cause—the race revolved around attacks as to who was more progressive & effective.
Here, Bowman emphasized his credentials as a progressive, running a campaign that highlighted his record as a a squad member, working to (without success) pass Biden's Build Back Better Plan, co-author part of the CHIPS act & worked hard to energize progressives
by contrast, Latimer ran to Bowman's right, emphasizing working across the aisle, getting stuff done, and crucially Bowman's vote against the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, claiming Bowman was a showboater congressman and against Biden's agenda
But the money, and Latimer's Popularity and Name Recognition were too much for the incumbent to overcome, leading to this as of writing 11.4% defeat.
Published this now because we're probably not going to get updated Westchester precinct Results for a few days if not weeks, and the map won't change until then.
July 10, 2024 addendum.
As things stand in NY-16th Congressional District, Incumbent Congressman Jamaal Bowman is losing to Westchester County Executive George Latimer, by just about 17.4%
Whilst i covered the campaign itself above, the primary results highlight a significant amount of racial polarization between Latimer and Bowman.
Here it can be seen that in precincts with at least a white plurality—comprising 66.5% of the electorate— Latimer won them by 44.3%, and precincts with at least a black plurality—comprising 22.8% of the electorate—Bowman won them by 49.9%.
Further, in precincts with at least a Latino plurality—comprising 10.4% of the electorate—Bowman won these by 8.4%. I should enphasise. that there aren't enough precincts (only 2) to confidently infer the Asian vote,
All in all, the primary results highlighted the racial stratification in the district, with mediocre turnout amongst minorities—and comparatively strong turnout amongst whites—turning what would've likely already been a comfortable latimer win into a landslide against Bowman.
