The 2025 Minneapolis Mayoral election, a contest mainly between two-term incumbent mayor Jacob Frey and South Minneapolis State Senator Omar Fateh resulted in a narrower-than-2021 reelection for the moderate incumbent over the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) affiliated challenger.
With stark differences over how to handle the issue of policing and affordable housing dominating the race, Frey's financial advantage and his experience in dealing with Minneapolis' various demographic groups were significant factors in allowing him to clinch his third and self-proclaimed final term.
Outside of the policy debate, Frey faced accusations from Fateh that he was unable to effectively work with the more progressive Minneapolis city council which the mayor had been Sparring with throughout his second term.
Fateh, on the other hand, was tied to his support of the 2021 defund the Police Referendum that was held in the wake of the murder of George Floyd by members of the Minneapolis Police by Frey. A 2021 Referendum that has in the years since remained significantly controversial in the city's politics.
In the end, however, Frey won. In doing so preserving the leading voice of Minneapolis' moderate DFL faction in a position of prominence, a position which he has promised to not seek reelection to come 2029.
