The 2024 AK 18th State house election, a contest between incumbent Cliff Groh and former incumbent David Nelson sees Groh lead narrowly by 25 votes (as of writing) in this Trump/Begich 2024 seat anchored by the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson
Crucial for determining the 2025-2027 Alaska House Majority, Groh (who unseated Nelson in 2022) winning would negate the demands of likely HD-36 winner Nellie "Unangik" Jimmie (who is demanding co-chairing the powerful House Finance Committee), allowing Bryce Edgmon to re-asumethe speakership he lost four years ago.
Divided between the Elmendorf-Richardson millitary base and the North Muldoon/Ship Creek and Government hill neighborhoods, Groh's campaign sought to press its incumbency and is on the cusp of winning (depending on the final count) the presidentially red seat.
As of writing there are ~100 votes left to count, which would need to break at ~65-35% for (R) Nelson to win. The latest count breaking for Groh by 63-38 votes (expanding his lead from 10 to 25 votes) as such made Nelson’s path incredibly steep.
