Situated along the Texas coast, 1 1/2 hours southwest from Houston, this small house will provide a respite for a young family. Inspired by local trestle piers and the riparian landscape of the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge, the House of Land and Sea straddles an existing concrete bulkhead to extend from the land out over the water. A framework of post/ piles and beams lift the volume above the flood plain, creating a space to house an automobile and a boat. Cladding the trestle structure is a random pattern of various dimensional Bald cypress lumber that creates a natural blind that focuses views out while filtering views and sunlight in.
The models collected here represent studies into the house's primary structure and explorations of the riparian skin.
