Block 38: Design Through Making

Located within the heart of a dense, urban area, how can the design of a large-scale, multi-story tenant improvement project reinvent the workplace environment and have a meaningful impact on its community? While seeking an answer to that question, a series of study models were created to explore design through the act of making.

In the first of three models, colored cubes and strings were placed throughout the building to explore how distribution of destinations and unique moments could impact the experience of moving through the building. Shades of red symbolize spaces designed for the client while blues represent community-oriented spaces. The second model uses abstract imagery layered on transparent ribbons to capture the ethereal qualities of space and the sensory experience of the user. The third model explores program adjacencies and ratios of heads-down space to amenity space, using color and scale to represent program areas more accurately.
