A ruined house north of Relay tower 0MC-810, where Knight Varham's Battlefield holotape can be found.
The recruitment office inside the National Guard training yard, where Knight Astlin's holotape can be found. Beware of the ghouls and turrets in the area.
A metal and wood structure above the ground connected to the southeast array tower at the Revere satellite array, where Scribe Faris' holotape can be found. This area is infested with super mutants, so be prepared for a fight.
After playing all three holotapes, a quest marker will appear at Recon bunker Theta, where Paladin Brandis, the leader of the recon team, is hiding. He will be hostile at first, but can be calmed down by telling him the fate of his officers. If the player is a member of the Brotherhood, they can also persuade him to return to the order through three dialogue checks. If successful, Brandis will later reward the player with the Survivor's Special, a unique laser rifle that does more damage when the player's health is low. Alternatively, the player can kill Brandis and loot his items, including a fusion core and a Steadfast BOS combat armor chest piece. To complete the quest, the player must report back to Danse or Kells.
Duty or Dishonor
This quest can be started by speaking to Kells after completing The Lost Patrol and Shadow of Steel. The quest involves investigating a case of missing supplies from the Prydwen's armory. The player will need to speak to several people on board the airship, including Proctor Teagan, Knight Lucia, Knight Sergeant Gavil, and Initiate Clarke. The player will also need to search for clues in various locations, such as Teagan's terminal, Lucia's quarters, and Clarke's personal storage container. The player will eventually discover that Clarke is smuggling food to a group of ghouls in the Boston Airport ruins. The player can then confront Clarke and decide his fate. The options are:
Kill Clarke and report back to Kells. This will earn the player some caps and XP, but also make them lose affinity with some companions who dislike violence.
Convince Clarke to turn himself in and report back to Kells. This will earn the player some caps and XP, as well as increase affinity with some companions who value honesty.
Help Clarke escape and lie to Kells. This will earn the player some caps and XP, as well as increase affinity with some companions who sympathize with ghouls.
Help Clarke escape and tell Kells the truth. This will earn the player some XP, but also make them lose reputation with the Brotherhood and possibly face consequences from Kells.
A Loose End
This quest can be started by speaking to Kells after completing Liberty Reprimed and Blind Betrayal. The quest involves dealing with Virgil, a former Institute scientist who turned himself into a super mutant and helped the player infiltrate the Institute. The player will need to travel to Virgil's cave in the Glowing Sea and either kill him or spare him. The options are:
Kill Virgil and report back to Kells. This will earn the player some caps and XP, but also make them lose affinity with some companions who respect Virgil.
Spare Virgil and report back to Kells. This will earn the player some XP, but also make them lose reputation with the Brotherhood and possibly face consequences from Kells.
Spare Virgil and lie to Kells. This will earn the player some caps and XP, as well as increase affinity with some companions who appreciate mercy.
Note that this quest is only available if the player has completed Virgil's Cure, a side quest that involves finding a serum that can reverse Virgil's mutation. If the player has not completed this quest, or has killed Virgil before, then this quest will not appear.
Other Quests
In addition to the above quests, the Brotherhood of Steel also offers some radiant quests that can be repeated indefinitely for caps and XP. These quests are given by various officers on board the Prydwen, such as Proctor Quinlan, Proctor Teagan, Knight Rhys, and Scribe Haylen. The quests are:
Cleansing the Commonwealth: Eliminate a target location of enemies, such as ghouls, raiders, or super mutants.
Quartermastery: Recover a piece of technology from a target location.
Leading By Example: Escort a squire to a target location and help them kill some enemies.
Learning Curve: Escort a scribe to a target location and protect them while they gather data.
Feeding the Troops: Secure a food supply from a settlement by either persuading, intimidating, or paying them.
Reactor Coolant: Craft some reactor coolant for Proctor Ingram using various materials.
These quests can be useful for gaining experience, caps, and reputation with the Brotherhood, as well as exploring new locations and finding loot. However, some of these quests may conflict with the interests of other factions or settlements, so the player should be careful about their choices.
Conclusion
The Brotherhood of Steel recon team quests are a series of missions that reveal the fate of a lost squad and their leader. The quests also involve making decisions that affect the player's relationship with the Brotherhood and other factions. The quests offer some rewards, such as unique items, caps, and XP, as well as some challenges, such as combat, dialogue checks, and moral dilemmas. The quests are optional, but can provide some insight into the Brotherhood's history and ideology.
