These strange times have us seeking companionship in strange ways. In his latest cover, Adrian Tomine, an astute observer of social mores, finds the humor in our increasingly digital search for love. We recently talked to the artist about Zoom lighting, artistic technique, and more.

When the story was published by Spin, only a few images were included. The rest were tucked away in storage. Recently, friends from the LABspace gallery in New York asked Hansen and Peacock about that day and wanted to see more. The photos were exhibited at the gallery before becoming a book.

In June 1915, while a student at Los Angeles High School, Horton went to the set of a film to meet with actor Tom Mix, who had recommended that she visit him if she wanted to "get into pictures".[15] However, when Mix was unavailable, she was advised to meet with pioneering film director D.W. Griffith,[15] who placed her under personal contract.[16] When it was decided that her given name was too long for theater marquees and too difficult to pronounce,[11] Griffith's associate Frank Woods gave Horton the stage name Bessie Love:[13][15] "Bessie, because any child can pronounce it. And Love, because we want everyone to love her!"[11] Love dropped out of high school to pursue her film career, but she completed her diploma in 1919.[17]

Love married then-stockbroker William Hawks[58] at St. James' Episcopal Church in South Pasadena, California on December 27, 1929.[3][59] Blanche Sweet was her matron of honor;[60] Bebe Daniels, Carmel Myers, Norma Shearer, and Hawks's sister-in-law Mary Astor were among her bridesmaids; and Irving Thalberg and Hawks's brother Howard served as ushers. Adrian had designed a wedding dress for Love,[61] but she instead wore a silk charmeuse gown by Howard Greer.[62][63] The ceremony was attended by such celebrities as Cecil Beaton, Ronald Colman, Cecil B. DeMille, Hedda Hopper, Laura La Plante, Harold Lloyd,[64] Anita Loos, Ramon Novarro, and William Powell,[65] and it was mobbed by a crowd of 25,000.[60] The wedding and reception were documented by the press and by Beaton in his Diaries, where he wrote that Love "looked like a terrified bird" but "radiated love".[65]

Despite her demure public image, Love was photographed in the nude by James Abbe[84] and Clarence Sinclair Bull,[85] and in sheer fabric by Edwin Bower Hesser,[86] who had also photographed Jean Harlow in a similar fashion.[87] These images have been shown in exhibitions of these artists' work.

As the saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words". There is certainly a lot of truth to this: pictures help us learn, pictures attract attention, pictures explain difficult concepts, pictures inspire - but why? Why are pictures so effective? Why does the human brain love pictures so much?

The sense of sight is generally considered the most important sense for our perception. However, a recent study shows that this is strongly culturally influenced and by no means universally valid. Nevertheless, our brain is designed to take in, transmit and process information via images.

Visualisation works from a human perspective because we respond to and process visual data better than any other type of data. In fact, the human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text, and 90 per cent of the information transmitted to the brain is visual.

Images are also better than text because reading is rather inefficient for us. Our brain sees words as individual images that we must first recognise. Thus, the appearance and order of the letters is important - to a certain extent. This is because our brain is quite good at reading even jumbled words. The first and last letters are most important, the order of the letters in between is secondary.

In general, the transmission of information from the eye to the brain happens at an unimaginable speed. When we see an image, we analyse it within a very short time, give the image meaning and embed it in a context. The human brain is able to recognise a familiar object within 100 milliseconds. A study by the renowned MIT estimates that as little as 13 milliseconds are sufficient to recognise even unfamiliar images. Just let that roll off your tongue: Thirteen. Milli. Seconds.

Our brain loves images and is amazingly good at processing them. This can be actively used by enriching your own notes or communication with employees or customers with pictures. If you think that this is complicated and that you have to be able to draw, here's the good news: you don't have to. It's much easier than you think, and sketchnoting is easy to learn. Just four months after Season 5 of the Kinetic Content series wrapped up on Netflix, the new season will debut on Netflix. Season 6 will be set in Charlotte, North Carolina, as 30 singles attempt to find true love and choose to get engaged before ever meeting their partner face-to-face.

As such, visual content is extremely important. 60 percent of consumers are more likely to click on a business whose images appear in search results, and 67 percent of consumers consider clear, detailed images to carry more weight than product information or customer ratings.

But how can we leverage this crucial aspect of human nature to design beautiful, engaging images in a consistent manner? By applying the visual trifecta: Appeal, comprehension, and retention.

Loving God, you make us in your image.

Forgive us when we fail to see your image in each other,

when we give in to greed and indifference

when we do not question the systems that are life-denying.

As we are made in your image,

let us live in your image

and be Christ-like

in service, endurance and love.

Amen
