Brief Profile
Sabyasachi Mukhopadhyay is a Ph.D. Research Scholar at the Centre for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS), IIT Kharagpur. The IIT KHARAGPUR AI4ICPS I HUB FOUNDATION, under the aegis of the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, awarded him the prestigious CHANAKYA PhD Fellowship during his PhD. Mukhopadhyay is presently the Vice Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter (IEEE CS SBC), IIT Kharagpur. He is the Upskilling Program Manager and Teaching Assistant, formerly the HAAI Program Administrator and Skills Development Manager (SDM), at the IIT Kharagpur AI4ICPS I Hub Foundation. He is an Assistant Professor of Business Analytics in Postgraduate Management Studies at BIMS Kolkata, affiliated with MAKAUT (On Academic Leave). He served as a University Faculty of Business Analytics and Statistics at the School of Management Science, MAKAUT (Govt. of WB), WB, India. He was also the University Course Coordinator for the BBA and MBA in Business Analytics at MAKAUT. He was the Academic Coordinator of the Partnership Cell as well as the Convener of the Institutions Innovation Council (IIC) at MAKAUT. Mukhopadhyay was involved in teaching IoT at the University of Calcutta as a Visiting Faculty member for the MCA students. Mukhopadhyay was also a Visiting Faculty member in Entrepreneurship at Techno India University. He is presently a Visiting Faculty of Healthcare Analytics in Postgraduate Management Studies in Data Science and Data Analytics (DSDA) at Symbiosis Center for Information Technology (SCIT), affiliated with SIU Pune (a private deemed university). He was also involved in teaching data science-related subjects at the WEBEL Fujisoft Vara Centre of Excellence. Meanwhile, Mukhopadhyay was a Project Scientist at Nanoscope Technologies for a brief period. Mukhopadhyay served as Chief Research Officer at Rootalpha Ventures Private Limited. Mukhopadhyay received his B.Tech. in ECE from CEM Kolaghat (affiliated with MAKAUT) in 2012. Mukhopadhyay received an MS in Physical Sciences from IISER Kolkata with the IISERK fellowship and was the ‘Topper’ of the 2015 batch. He is the ‘Course Curriculum Developer’, ‘Paper Setter’, ‘Examiner’, and ‘Moderator’ of MAKAUT and SCIT Pune. He is a ‘Google Developer Expert in AI and Machine Learning’ and also a 'Google Champion Innovator in Cloud AI / ML'. He was the former Kolkata Lead of Facebook Developer Circle and Intel Software Innovator. He was the ‘Co-Founder’ and ‘Chief Research Officer’ of Twelit MedTech Pvt. Ltd. and is currently involved in startup mentoring activities. For instance, he is the ‘Honorary Advisor’ (Technical Development) of Solaire Initiative Pvt. Ltd. He was featured in Facebook’s special coverage, ‘The Limitless’ as one of India’s leading innovators and entrepreneurs of 2018.
He has more than 70 publications, which include patents, books, journals, and proceedings. Mukhopadhyay is a Reviewer for many prestigious research journals and conferences. His findings on AI-based retinal disease detection and AI-based early-stage cancer detection have been highlighted in all leading newspapers like ‘The Hindu’, ‘The Economic Times’, ‘The Indian Express’, ‘Business Standard’, ‘Daily World’ as well as on television channels like ‘Zee News’, ‘Odisha Tv’, ‘NewsX’, ‘News World India’. His research success has also been featured in leading national and international tech magazines like ‘eHealth’, ‘Analytics India Magazine’, ‘The Better India’, ‘BioSpectrum’, and 'Nature India'. He received several international awards, which include ‘Best Research Paper Award’, the prestigious ‘SPIE Photonics Education Scholarship-2014’ (only 19 students from Asia, 144 students around the world received that), ‘Most Inspiring Facebook Developer Circle Lead’ (twice), 'Best Supportive Lead', 'Master "Hacker" Award', 'Alumni Award 2020 By IISER Kolkata' and so on. College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat, recognized Mukhopadhyay as the Distinguished Alumnus. During his Ph.D., he was awarded the ACM India Anveshan Setu Fellowship in 2023 and 2024. He also received several travel grants from SPIE, and IISER to present research at international conferences. Mukhopadhyay was onboarded as a nominated ‘Board Member and External Expert of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC)’ at IEM Kolkata, Techno India Main Salt Lake, IISER Kolkata and Meghnad Saha Institute Of Technology (MSIT). Mukhopadhyay was also onboarded as an External Expert of the National Innovation & Startup Policy (NISP) Expert Committee at IISER Kolkata and Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College. Techno India University invited Mukhopadhyay as an external member of the Board of Studies in the BSc Data Science Program in July 2022. In October 2023, WEBEL Fujisoft Vara Center of Excellence onboarded him as an external member of the Board of Studies for the Data Science Department. In October 2024, the Centre for Collaborative Programs, Training & Research (CCPTR) MAKAUT, in collaboration with ISOAH Data Securities Pvt. Ltd., onboarded him as an external member of the Board of Studies (BoS) for the BSc in Digital Forensic Program.
Mukhopadhyay delivered invited talks and served as a panelist and judge at hackathons at leading IITs, IISERs, NITs, IIEST Shibpur, as well as many other leading state, central, and private universities and various government and private colleges in India. He also delivered invited talks at foreign universities like 'University of Global Village, Bangladesh', 'Université Kofi Annan de Guinée, Guinea', 'Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology, Bhutan' and so on. Sabyasachi’s research on AI-based early-stage cancer detection has been included in the current affair syllabus of India’s top Govt. official competitive exams like UPSC, IAS, IBPS, Banking, etc. Mukhopadhyay was also invited to deliver talks in ‘ATAL AICTE Faculty Development Programme’ of IEM Kolkata, CEM Kolaghat, NIT Mizoram, NIT Durgapur, and ‘Refreshers Courses for Faculties’ at Calcutta University, and Narula Institute Of Technology. He delivered an invited talk in a webinar organized by the IT Department of MAKAUT (Govt. of WB) during the Student Induction Programme for the new B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA, and B.Sc. batches. Mukhopadhyay delivered a hands-on session on Quantum Machine Learning as an Expert Speaker in an 'AICTE ATAL Short Term Training Program (STTP)' by the IT department of MAKAUT in July 2021. He was also invited as a ‘Judge’ of the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2018 at the Heritage Institute of Technology in Kolkata. He was the Judge of the ‘Hult Prize’ at Netaji Subhas Engineering College, NIT Durgapur and Calcutta University. He was also invited to take the hands-on sessions on the different topics related to Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and explainable AI (XAI) in the FDPs sponsored by the Electronics & Information Communication Technology (E & ICT) Academy, IIT Roorkee, a joint initiative by MeitY & IIT Roorkee and organized by the universities like BIT Mesra and Chitkara University in September 2024. Mukhopadhyay played an important role in designing the curriculum of the Hands-on Approach to Artificial Intelligence for real-world applications (HAAI) organized by IIT Kharagpur AI4ICPS I Hub Foundation and TCS iON to boost the upskilling activities of the hub and was the teaching assistant in different cohorts to take the hands-on sessions in Supervised Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and other AI career guidance-related talks. As a Course Coordinator of AI4ICPS, Mukhopadhyay organized the 5-Day Mid Career Training Program (MCTP) Phase 1 on the Foundation Course on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data for Indian Statistical Services (ISS) officers at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, from November 11 to November 15, 2024, which was funded by the National Statistical Systems Training Academy (NSSTA), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), and was conducted by the IIT Kharagpur AI4ICPS I Hub Foundation. He also delivered the hands-on session on 'NLP: Text Analysis, Sentiment Analysis, and the Applications of NLP' in this program. As a Course Coordinator of AI4ICPS, Mukhopadhyay organized the Residential Training Program on AI and Cybersecurity for the employees of GRID India and SLDC, at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur from March 17 to March 21, 2025, and funded by the Ministry of Power (MoP), Govt. of India, in collaboration with Zettawise Consulting Pvt. Ltd.,. He also delivered the hands-on session on ‘Securing User Authentication Using AI’ in this program.
He delivered TEDx talks twice, at TEDxBalajiITS and TEDx HITKolkata.His TEDx talk at TEDxBalajiITS was featured on news channels including ETV Telangana, Chappudu TV, and newspapers like Velugu, Andhra Jyothy, Sakshi, and so on. As part of Project HANSA—Leadership Journey for Young Officers of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL)—at the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM), IIT Kharagpur, he received two consecutive invitations to speak on Industry 4.0, Industry 5.0, and the basics of AI. He wrote technical articles for the editorial of the leading Bengali daily, Anandabazar Patrika. He also wrote an invited article on AI applications for COVID-19 detection written in Bengali and published in Bigyan Katha (Page No. 16), a publication by Vigyan Prasar, an autonomous organization of DST, Govt. of India. Mukhopadhyay received an honorary mention on the government's official site, The Embassy of India to Switzerland, The Holy See, & Liechtenstein, for his research.
