Brief Profile
Sabyasachi Mukhopadhyay is a Ph.D. Research Scholar at the Centre for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS), Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He is a recipient of the prestigious CHANAKYA PhD Fellowship, awarded by the IIT Kharagpur AI4ICPS I Hub Foundation under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, during his doctoral studies.
He currently serves as the Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter (IEEE CS SBC), IIT Kharagpur, for the 2025–2026 session, and previously held the position of Vice Chair during the 2024–2025 session. At the IIT Kharagpur AI4ICPS I Hub Foundation, he is presently working as an Upskilling Program Manager and Teaching Assistant, and has earlier served as the HAAI Program Administrator and Skills Development Manager (SDM).
Mukhopadhyay is an Assistant Professor of Business Analytics in postgraduate management studies at BIMS Kolkata, affiliated with Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) (currently on academic leave). He previously served as a University Faculty of Business Analytics and Statistics at the School of Management Science, MAKAUT (Government of West Bengal), where he also held responsibilities as the University Course Coordinator for the BBA and MBA programs in Business Analytics, Academic Coordinator of the Partnership Cell, and Convener of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC).
His teaching experience further includes appointments as a Visiting Faculty of IoT for MCA students at the University of Calcutta, Visiting Faculty of Entrepreneurship at Techno India University, and Visiting Faculty of Healthcare Analytics in postgraduate programs in Data Science and Data Analytics (DSDA) at the Symbiosis Center for Information Technology (SCIT), affiliated with Symbiosis International (Deemed University), Pune. He has also been involved in teaching data science–related courses at the WEBEL Fujisoft Vara Centre of Excellence.
In the industry, Mukhopadhyay briefly served as a Project Scientist at Nanoscope Technologies and later as the Chief Research Officer at Rootalpha Ventures Private Limited. He holds a B.Tech. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat (affiliated with MAKAUT), obtained in 2012, and an M.S. in Physical Sciences from IISER Kolkata, where he was awarded the IISERK Fellowship and graduated as the topper of the 2015 batch.
He has contributed extensively to academic governance as a Course Curriculum Developer, Paper Setter, Examiner, and Moderator for MAKAUT and SCIT Pune. Mukhopadhyay is a Google Developer Expert (GDE) in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and a Google Champion Innovator in Cloud AI/ML. He previously served as the Kolkata Lead of Facebook Developer Circle and as an Intel Software Innovator.
An entrepreneur and startup mentor, he was the Co-Founder and Chief Research Officer of Twelit MedTech Pvt. Ltd. and is currently engaged in mentoring early-stage startups, including serving as the Honorary Advisor (Technical Development) to Solaire Initiative Pvt. Ltd. He was featured in Facebook’s special coverage “The Limitless” as one of India’s leading innovators and entrepreneurs in 2018.
He has authored more than 70 publications, including patents, books, journal articles, and conference proceedings. Mukhopadhyay serves as a reviewer for several prestigious research journals and conferences. His work on AI-based retinal disease detection and AI-driven early-stage cancer detection has been highlighted in leading national newspapers such as The Hindu, The Economic Times, The Indian Express, Business Standard, and Daily World, as well as on television channels including Zee News, Odisha TV, NewsX, and News World India. His research contributions have also been featured in prominent national and international technology magazines, including eHealth, Analytics India Magazine, The Better India, BioSpectrum, and Nature India.
He has received several international awards, including the Best Research Paper Award, the prestigious Fall 2025 IEEE Computer Society Richard E. Merwin Award, the SPIE Photonics Education Scholarship (2014), the Most Inspiring Facebook Developer Circle Lead Award (twice), the Best Supportive Lead Award, the Master “Hacker” Award, and the IISER Kolkata Alumni Award (2020), among others. The College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat, recognized Mukhopadhyay as a Distinguished Alumnus.
During his Ph.D., he was awarded the ACM India Anveshan Setu Fellowship in both 2023 and 2024. He is also the recipient of the Fall 2025 IEEE Computer Society Richard E. Merwin Award for exemplary leadership, professional service, and contributions to computing education and research during his doctoral studies. In addition, he received multiple travel grants from SPIE and IISER to present his research at international conferences during his master’s studies.
Mukhopadhyay has been onboarded as a nominated Board Member and External Expert of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) at IEM Kolkata, Techno India Main Salt Lake, IISER Kolkata, and Meghnad Saha Institute of Technology (MSIT). He has also served as an External Expert on the National Innovation and Startup Policy (NISP) Expert Committee at IISER Kolkata and Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College. Techno India University invited him as an external member of the Board of Studies for the B.Sc. Data Science program in July 2022. In October 2023, the WEBEL Fujisoft Vara Center of Excellence onboarded him as an external member of the Board of Studies for the Data Science department. Furthermore, in October 2024, the Centre for Collaborative Programs, Training & Research (CCPTR), MAKAUT, in collaboration with ISOAH Data Securities Pvt. Ltd., appointed him as an external member of the Board of Studies for the B.Sc. in Digital Forensics program.
Mukhopadhyay has delivered numerous invited talks and has served as a panelist and judge at hackathons across leading academic institutions, including IITs, IISERs, NITs, IIEST Shibpur, as well as several prominent state, central, and private universities and government and private colleges across India. He has also delivered invited talks at international universities, such as the University of Global Village, Bangladesh, Université Kofi Annan de Guinée, Guinea, and Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology, Bhutan, among others.
His research on AI-based early-stage cancer detection has been included in the current affairs syllabus of India’s top government competitive examinations, including UPSC, IAS, IBPS, and Banking examinations. Mukhopadhyay has been invited to deliver lectures under the ATAL–AICTE Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) conducted at IEM Kolkata, CEM Kolaghat, NIT Mizoram, and NIT Durgapur, as well as Refresher Courses for faculty members at the University of Calcutta and Narula Institute of Technology. He also delivered an invited talk during a webinar organized by the IT Department of MAKAUT (Government of West Bengal) as part of the Student Induction Programme for incoming B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA, and B.Sc. cohorts.
In July 2021, Mukhopadhyay delivered a hands-on session on Quantum Machine Learning as an Expert Speaker in an AICTE–ATAL Short-Term Training Programme (STTP) organized by the Department of Information Technology, MAKAUT. He was also invited as a Judge for the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2018 held at the Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata, and served as a Judge for the Hult Prize competitions at Netaji Subhash Engineering College, NIT Durgapur, and the University of Calcutta.
Additionally, Mukhopadhyay conducted hands-on training sessions on Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Explainable AI (XAI) under Faculty Development Programmes sponsored by the Electronics and Information Communication Technology (E&ICT) Academy, IIT Roorkee, a joint initiative of MeitY and IIT Roorkee, and hosted by institutions such as BIT Mesra and Chitkara University in September 2024.
He played a key role in designing the curriculum for the Hands-on Approach to Artificial Intelligence for Real-World Applications (HAAI) program, jointly organized by the IIT Kharagpur AI4ICPS I Hub Foundation and TCS iON, aimed at strengthening the hub’s upskilling initiatives. He also served as a Teaching Assistant across multiple cohorts, delivering hands-on sessions in Supervised Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and providing AI career guidance lectures.
As a Course Coordinator at AI4ICPS, Mukhopadhyay organized the 5-Day Mid-Career Training Programme (MCTP) – Phase I on the Foundation Course on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data for Indian Statistical Service (ISS) officers at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, held from November 11 to November 15, 2024. This program was funded by the National Statistical Systems Training Academy (NSSTA), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), and conducted by the IIT Kharagpur AI4ICPS I Hub Foundation. He also delivered a hands-on session on “NLP: Text Analysis, Sentiment Analysis, and Applications of NLP” during the program.
Furthermore, as a Course Coordinator, Mukhopadhyay organized a Residential Training Programme on Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity for employees of GRID India and SLDC at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, held from March 17 to March 21, 2025. The program was funded by the Ministry of Power (MoP), Government of India, and conducted in collaboration with Zettawise Consulting Pvt. Ltd. He also delivered a hands-on session on “Securing User Authentication Using AI” as part of this training.
Mukhopadhyay was the Course Coordinator for the Residential Training Program on AI and Cybersecurity for the Power Sector at the IIT Kharagpur Research Park, Newtown, West Bengal, from August 18 to August 23, 2025, and was funded by the Ministry of Power (MoP), Govt of India, and was conducted by the IIT Kharagpur AI4ICPS I Hub Foundation and Zettawise Consulting Pvt Ltd in partnership with CSIRT Power.
He delivered two TEDx talks at TEDxBalajiITS and TEDxHITKolkata. His TEDx talk at TEDxBalajiITS was featured on news channels including ETV Telangana and Chappudu TV, as well as in leading newspapers such as Velugu, Andhra Jyothy, and Sakshi, among others. As part of Project HANSA—Leadership Journey for Young Officers of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) at the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM), IIT Kharagpur, he received two consecutive invitations to deliver expert lectures on Industry-4.0, Industry-5.0, and the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence. He has authored technical articles for the editorial section of the leading Bengali daily Anandabazar Patrika. Additionally, he wrote an invited article in Bengali on AI-based COVID-19 detection, published in Bigyan Katha (p.16), a science communication magazine by Vigyan Prasar, an autonomous organization under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Mukhopadhyay also received an honorary mention on the official website of the Embassy of India to Switzerland, the Holy See, and Liechtenstein in recognition of his research contributions.
