Trail Maintenance in Progress-
July 2023 UPDATE: Trail conditions on Heron and Frog Trails are generally good; you may experience some sections narrowed due to unusually heavy growth this summer.
Toussaint Loop, Packer Creek and Old Bridge trails are undergoing major maintenance as part of a two-year upgrade.
While currently open, use these trails with caution - they are NOT being maintained for hiking at the same level as we usually do. If you see 'restriced access' sign, please CALL before hiking.
Trails maintaned by the Ottawa National Widlife Refuge are available at several locations, including a 1/2 mile trail located about 1.5 miles west of Camp Sabroske (on same road as camp), as well as at the refuge located on State Route Two, three miles west of Camp Sabroske.

"Heron & Frog"
0.75 Mile Loop
Great for young hikers !
- less than 30 minutes
- Almost IMPOSSIBLE to get lost!
Yet with a diversity of habitat that even experienced hikers will find interesting, including an eagle's nest, aquatic mammals, and depending on season a surprising diversity of birds and other wildlife.
Begin at east side of Lodge Parking Lot, and east walk along drive to the flag poles.
Then turn right and continue south along the pine tree line, passing the small red pump station.
Continue straight along this path until you reach Packer Creek (bridge will be on your left).
This is a generally level but at times rather uneven gravel/dirt path - walking sticks recommended, not suitable for strollers.
You will notice several side paths, which are less well maintained and which do not have trail signs so you may wish to avoid these 'shortcuts'.
Continue to follow west along the creek until the trail turns north, then emerges by the camp pond area. Continue right along the pond, back to the lodge parking area.
We try to eliminate poison ivy along the path but washing legs, hands and arms with soap and warm water after a journey is always a wise precaution. You are welcome to use the restrooms at the lodge.
If you do become a bit confused just continue as straight as possible. You will reach either Packer Creek (follow 'left'), the road you drove in on (follow 'left'), or see abandoned railroad at-the-pond (turn 'right') and you will be back at the main camp in less than 10 minutes !
Restroom facilities are available at the Lodge April 15 - October 31st
Restrooms are available 24/7 year-round days at the rest area located about 4 miles east of the Camp on SR 2
Toussaint Creek 1.5 Mile Loop
Begins East Marsh parking area, passing an optional 'Old Bridge' north overlook, and returning by marked route - look for 'right turn' at about the 3/4 mile point OR continue 'stright' along Packer Creek to exit along N.Toussaint N Road at Packer Creek Bridge and make your way back to either Lodge or East Marsh parking areas.
Keep your eyes moving through this journey and you will find yourself passing by two eagles nests, a 100+ year old abandoned bridge, racoon, muskrat and seasonal varieties of waterfowl including egrets, herons and much more in this diverse woods/wetlands habitat.
This is a generally level but at times uneven gravel/dirt path.
You may notice unmarked paths - which are NOT maintained; for your safety travel on these is not permitted.
Bug spray is strongly recommended!
