Formerly “Lessons from Abroad”, the newly re-envisioned and restructured Leadership Symposium will provide participants an opportunity to hear from and network with professionals to not only unpack their international experience, but to provide strategies for incorporating it into their everyday lives: career, academic, and personal.
Students who have had any international experience are welcome to attend.

Tours: U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa (2002 – Internship; Special Assistant to the U.S. Ambassador), U.S. Embassy in Luanda, Angola (2004-06 – Consular and Public Diplomacy Officer), U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal (2006-08 – Political and Economic Affairs Officer), State Department’s Operations Center (2008-09 – Watch Officer), White House Situation Room (2009-10 – Duty Officer), State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs – West African Affairs Office (2010-12 – Country Desk Officer for Guinea, Ghana, and Niger), U.S. Embassy in Juba, South Sudan (2012-13 – Public Affairs Officer), State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs – Executive Front Office (2013-14 – Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary), U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya (2014-16 – Press Officer and Spokesperson), Council on Foreign Relations (2016-17 – International Affairs Fellowship), and State Department’s Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation – Strategic Communication and Outreach Office (2017-18 – Deputy Director and Outreach Coordinator)

Years of Service: 16
Prior Experience: I consider the Foreign Service my first actual career; however, I’ve had a few interesting seasonal jobs during my undergraduate and graduate study years. They include sales officer for a book and music retailer, freelance writer and editor for an academic journal, bartender at a jazz club, software support analyst at an insurance company, and human resources officer for a toy retailer.
