African Americans and Photography

Hello & Welcome!

This web resource was created to support students enrolled in Professor Bridget R. Cooks' Spring 2023 class: African Americans and Photography. For your major assignment, you will be writing an exhibition review that requires research and a variety of primary and secondary sources. This website guides you to information on writing/finding exhibition reviews as well as scholarly books and articles from academic art journals and magazines.

Tips for you:

Connecting to library resources while off-campus

Remote access to the UCI Libraries' licensed online resources is available to current UC Irvine students, faculty & staff. In order to use these resources you must be "authenticated" (recognized as a valid user) by the UCI campus network. Click here for more info.

Request to Pick Up Books and/or Chapter Scans:

Because the 4th floor of Langson Library, where the visual arts books are held, remains closed for Spring 2023 quarter, you need to request your materials in advance and pick them up at the check-out desk on the main floor of the library. HERE ARE THE STEPS TO DO THIS.

"Writing in Art History" hand-out and tips

This handout created by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill highlights key strategies for approaching and analyzing visual materials.

Artist Biographies & Bibliographies:

Oxford Art Online: Provides access to online art reference works, including Grove Art Online and the Benezit Dictionary of Artists

Oxford Bibliographies: Peer-reviewed annotated bibliographies on artists, movements, and other topics in the field of art and art history.

About your librarian

Meet Your Librarian: Jenna Dufour (she/her)

I am a first-gen college graduate, and I moved to California from Canada in 2019.

Before university, I went to college and initially had a difficult time transitioning to academia, often feeling overwhelmed and left behind. So, for me, the best part of my job is helping students feel included and a part of the academic and UCI community, and of course to find good quality resources!

I work with students and faculty in Art History, Visual Studies, Art, and Film Studies so I do get quite busy. But no question is silly, and I'm here to help make the research process a little less stressful :)
