Modular Hub Combat Robot
Overview
This post covers the progression of my signature 1lb combat robot "Bioluminescent." Over its one year history, its built a reputation as one of the most advanced, decorated, and dangerous robots in the field. At the core of the robot lies a single principle "optimization." From this core concept, a number of unique technologies were developed. A signature modular design able to be customized to face any opponent. A field-dominating hub motor capable of withstanding any impact. A forged composite frame to attain maximum strength at minimum weight. Weapon blades generated through custom topology optimization scripts to maximize MOI and strength efficiency. A fully custom drivetrain which pushes the limits of FDM printing to reduce weight and footprint. All of these technologies, integerated and tempered through years of experience and hundreds of battles, resulted in the current form of the robot.
Background
Combat robotics is a sport in which two robots attempt to disable one another within an alloted timeframe. The robots are divided by weight class such as 1lb (antweight), 3lb (beetleweight), and 30lb (featherweight) all the way to over 250lbs. While the general principles of combat robotics apply across all weight classes, availible materials, manufacturing techniques, and physics gives each weight class a completely unique experience. At 1lb, robots have significantly higher energy density, relative mobility, and durability than higher weight classes. This results in highly energetic matches where robots violently trade blows for minutes on end. In all weight classes, a certain "meta" arises where certain styles of robots become more prevelant due to their effectiveness. At 1lb, the elevated durability allows robots to allocate more weight to their weapons, resulting in a "spinner" heavy meta. As a general simplification, spinners can fall into 3 primary categories:
Uses a vertically spinning blade to cut through opponents.
Effective Against-Drum Spinners
Weaknesses-Horizontal Spinners
Uses a large toothed drum to impact and launch opponents
Effective Against-Horizontal Spinners
Weaknesses-Vertical Spinners
Uses a large horizontally spinning blade to deliver massive impacts
Effective Against-Vertical Spinners
Weaknesses-Drum Spinners
Typical robots fall into a single architype and then augment their performance with various attatchements. The addition of wedges increases weapon effectiveness against opposing horizontal spinners. Adding forks to the front can help against opposing wedges and spinners. Despite these augments, there are fundamental limits to the matchups and performance. Bioluminescent's modular design seeks to solve these issues by introducing the ability to switch weapons to suit the opponent.
"Reach" Vertical Spinner
The primary configuration of the robot. It uses a large topology optimized blade on my custom V3 hub motor to deliver incredibly destructive impacts. The layout of the bot has been carefully optimized to control and outrange opponents.
Anti Horizontal
This configuration uses a small, high rpm weapon to disable the weapons of opposing horizontals. The front of the robot is composed of polypropylene composite with TPU flap armor and a titanium wedge to slow down and deflect opponents.
Hammersaw
This configuration uses a high velocity weapon mounted on the end of an articulating arm to attack opponents on their unarmored tops. A large molded composite front supplies stiffness and strength.
Horizontal Spinner
Features the largest weeapon out of all modules. Carbon fiber spars attatch the hub motor and blade to chassis.
