VOLUNTEER COACHES NEEDED!
RVA Tidewater GO Hockey highly values community! We are a non-profit organization working together to introduce the sport of field hockey in a fun way! Over half of our volunteer coaches are adult players in our adult league, and we love seeing former players and new-to-field hockey parents getting involved with coaching their children in our program.
We will always have an experienced field hockey player coaching your child, but it is our hope that our parents with athletic backgrounds will considering joining our team of coaches to help build general sport knowledge (ie: spreading out, pass), share fun ideas, and maintain a safe and encouraging environment for all. With support from our experienced players and coaches, your participation and willingness to start learning the basics alongside your player does make a meaningful impact on our program, and we are greatly appreciative!

About GO Hockey
While on a club field hockey team your child would train to play 11v11 with standard field hockey equipment, Tidewater Rec will play GO Hockey (4v4) focusing on introducing a sport, getting in lots of touches, and burning energy on a smaller field. At Tidewater Rec GO Hockey we will use a larger, softer ball and minimal equipment (think PE class!) to include all those interested in giving hockey a go for the first time.
Equipment Needed:
U12 Next Level: Shin guards (field hockey suggested by not required), tennis shoes or turf shoes, outdoor stick, mouth guard, black shorts for tournament --- neon yellow socks and reversible jersey included in registration
Grades 1-5: Shin guards (soccer or field hockey) & tennis shoes, stick (optional, we will have sticks to borrow), mouth guard (suggested but not required)
Minis: No equipment needed. Wear tennis shoes
Projected Format:
Minis: 20 min movement, 10 min skill, 15 mins play
Coed Recreational 1st-5th grade: 15 min warm-up, 15-30 min skills & learning games, 30-45 min scrimmage
U12 Coed Next Level: 15 min warm-up, 45 min skills, 30 min scrimmage
NOW AT TWO LOCATIONS!
With the support and encouragement of USA Field Hockey, we are also now looking forward to expanding a little more to allow for the growth of our GO Hockey players within the program to create a natural progression to club and high school field hockey. In order to continue to invite new-to-field hockey players to join our program while continuing to develop the basic skills of returning players, we are now at two locations (both 5:00-6:30 on Sundays).
Although the program is the same, the type of field and groupings are different ---->
Tucker High School
(Geared Towards Older Families)
*Tucker High School is a field turf field. High school games are now majorily played on turf fields.
Anticipated Divisions*:
Coed Minis (1 Group*)
Coed 1st-2nd Grade (2 Groups*)
3rd-5th Grade (8 Groups*) Beginner/ Intermediate
-Includes 3rd-5th Grade Boys Group
U12 Next Level (1 Team)
*adjustments may need to be made according to enrollment and coaches available.
Tuckahoe Middle School
(Geared Towards Younger Families)
*Tuckahoe Middle School is a grass field, a slower surface. There is a fenced in playground right next to the field-- a nice feature for younger siblings including our Minis who finish 45 minutes before older siblings.
Anticipated Divisions*:
Coed Minis (4 Groups*)
Coed 1st-2nd Grade (5 Groups*)
Coed 3rd-5th Grade (2 Groups*) Beginner
*adjustments may need to be made according to enrollment and coaches available.
With two fields now, we have big goals to get more players off our waitlist this season! More slots will be opened as volunteer coaches, assistants, and parent helpers step forward. Thanks for your interest and willingness to join the movement to #growthegame
