History and Concept
Hed Kandi was founded in 1999 by Mark Doyle, a former A&R manager at Jazz FM. The label aimed to create a distinctive brand identity and lifestyle concept, combining high-quality music compilations with stylish artwork, events, and merchandise. Hed Kandi's motto was "a brighter way to play", reflecting its upbeat and glamorous approach to dance music culture.
Nu Cool was one of the first series launched by Hed Kandi, along with Disco Heaven and Beach House. The term "nu cool" was coined by Doyle to describe a new wave of artists and producers who blended elements of jazz, soul, funk, hip hop, and house music into a fresh and innovative sound. Nu Cool was inspired by the likes of Jamiroquai, Morcheeba, Erykah Badu, Nuyorican Soul, and Down to the Bone, among others.
The albums were compiled by Doyle himself, who had a keen ear for discovering new talents and trends. He also commissioned original artwork for each release, featuring glamorous female characters drawn by Jason Brooks. The artwork became a signature feature of Hed Kandi's products, capturing the essence and mood of each series.
Reception and Legacy
The Nu Cool series was well received by critics and fans alike, who praised its eclectic and sophisticated selection of tracks. The albums sold over a million copies worldwide, making it one of Hed Kandi's most successful series. The series also helped to introduce many emerging artists to a wider audience, such as Erykah Badu, Morcheeba, S-Tone Inc., R.E.D., and Anthea.
The Nu Cool series ended in 2007, after Doyle left Hed Kandi to start his own label, Fierce Angel. However, the series left a lasting impact on the electronic music scene, influencing many other labels and artists who followed its footsteps. Nu Cool also remains a popular and influential genre among music lovers who appreciate its smooth and chilled vibes.
