Redondo Union Names Alum and Former NFL Linebacker Keith Ellison Head Football Coach

(January 13, 2022) – Redondo Union High School has announced the hiring of former Sea Hawk star and NFL linebacker Keith Ellison as the school’s new head football coach, replacing Matt Ballard, who had coached the team for 10 years before retiring at the end of the 2021 season.

“Coming back to Redondo is exciting, and I look forward to breathing new life into this program – a program that has winning tradition and a history of creating not only outstanding athletes, but also outstanding young men.”

Ellison, 37, played five seasons as a linebacker for the Buffalo Bills, where he recorded 218 tackles. He played college football at El Camino College and Oregon State University before being drafted in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

At Redondo Union High School, Ellison was a standout in football and basketball. In football, he played quarterback, linebacker and safety; and as a senior, he was named the Bay League’s Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-CIF selection. In basketball, he was a four-year letterman and starter for the Sea Hawks.

“Keith is a smart and detail-oriented coach who is passionate about helping players succeed,” said RUHS Athletic Director Evan Fujinaga. “Football and teaching are in his blood, and I believe he will be an outstanding asset to the Sea Hawk football program.”

Ellison, who graduated from Redondo in 2002 and is currently a physical education and social studies teacher at Redondo Beach Unified School District Adams Middle School, said he hopes to bring his professional football experience and his love of teaching to the job.

“We will be teaching much more than Xs and Os,” he said. “Effective coaching runs deeper than wins and losses, it also includes reaching athletes on an individual level and making sure that the young men in our program can succeed in and out of the classroom no matter where their futures take them.”

Ellison is the middle son of an impressive football family – Older brother, Chris Ellison, starred at BYU from 1997 to 1998. Keith’s younger brother, the late Kevin Ellison (Redondo Class of 2005), was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2009 out of the University of Southern California.
