Why Assemblage?
Assemblages are characterized by their relational nature. They involve arranging diverse entities that come together to form a new whole. These assemblages are not mere representations of the world but are productive, generating new territorial organizations, behaviors, expressions, actors, and realities. They are also heterogeneous, encompassing various elements such as humans, animals, things, and ideas. This socio-material perspective breaks down the traditional division between nature and culture. We invite you to watch these movies and consider how we can relate to all that surrounds us and how we are a part of it. Can we think about our new realities in this way? How can this perspective help us better understand the world around us?
¿Por qué ensamblajes?
Los ensamblajes se caracterizan por su naturaleza relacional. Implican la disposición de entidades diversas que se unen para formar un nuevo todo. Estos ensamblajes no son meras representaciones del mundo, sino que son productivos y generan nuevas organizaciones territoriales, comportamientos, expresiones, actores y realidades. También son heterogéneos, pues engloban diversos elementos como seres humanos, animales, cosas e ideas. Esta perspectiva socio-material rompe la división tradicional entre naturaleza y cultura. Le invitamos a ver estas películas y a plantearse cómo podemos relacionarnos con todo lo que nos rodea y cómo formamos parte de ello. ¿Podemos pensar en nuestras nuevas realidades de esta manera? ¿Cómo puede esta perspectiva ayudarnos a comprender mejor el mundo que nos rodea?

How to watch the movies?
1. This is a free online film festival open to all. Each movie will be available for two weeks. You can find the calendar below.
2. Online access opens Monday from 6:00 am ET and closes on the Friday of the second week at 11:59 pm ET. We are based in New Jersey (USA). Check your time zone (here)
3. You will scan the QR code or open the link to complete your registration in a Qualtrics survey. You will register for each of the movies.
4. Please answer all the questions in the questionnaire. This is a collaborative project; everybody involved will learn from your feedback for future initiatives.
4. At the end of the questionnaire iyou will find the link to the movie, the username, and the password.

Schedule / Calendario
Each movie has a different link. It will be available for two weeks for online viewing. The start day will be 6:00 am, and the last day will close at 11:59 pm. It is free and open to the public. The movie Oklahoma Mon Amour will be screened on campus on Tuesday, April 9, at 7:00 pm, in Voorhees Hall Room 105, with a Q&A by film director Carolina Rueda. Please read the instructions above.

Oklahoma Mon Amour portrays a ruptured family and the quest for its reunion, the journey of two brothers, and the challenges faced by multicultural youth needing to find their true identity and to unveil buried secrets, all of this tinted by the puzzling closeness between Mexico and the U.S. Filmed in black and white and with a non-traditional structure evocative of an earlier cinema from the sixties and seventies, the film also interacts with current world tensions, and presents an unusual approach to the Mexico/U.S dynamics, also showing a cosmopolitan Mexico City seldom seen in cinema. The film has been selected at seven international film festivals and won the Best Female Cinematographer award at the Toronto International Women’s Film Festival and the Best Family Film award at the Silk Road Film Awards in France.

This story takes place in the high-altitude páramos of southern Colombia (Pasto region), situated within the magnificent Andes mountain range. It focuses on the Quillasinga family, particularly on Camilo, a young Afro-Colombian raised by an indigenous couple from the Quillasinga indigenous community. Being the only African descendant in his community, Camilo has always felt different and has for years longed to uncover his roots and learn about his biological parents. The Quillasinga governor, who is an indigenous leader, offers Camilo Ayahuasca, a sacred remedy known for its ability to provide spiritual guidance. During his transformative journey, Camilo has intense visions of his biological mother. Empowered by his adoptive father, he sets off on a quest to discover and embrace his true identity. "Between Fire and Water" is a documentary that portrays the social structure and justice system of the Quillasinga community, revealing their unique way of life. Through Camilo's personal growth and self-discovery, the acclaimed documentary offers a glimpse into the traditional values of Afro-Latin and indigenous cultures.

Sam Carhuayano (she/her/hers), a junior at the School of Arts and Sciences, majors in Environmental Studies and Sociology. A future environmental lawyer, she passionately advocates for social justice, particularly addressing environmental injustices impacting marginalized Indigenous, Black, and LatinX communities. Sam envisions serving inner-city populations facing historical environmental hazards, such as neighborhoods built above superfund sites. As an advocate, she addresses unique adversities, including mental health stigma among people of color. Sam works to support students in managing stress with Active Mind Rutgers for better mental well-being.
Meridian Carsky-Wilson (they/them) is a sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Creative Expression and the Environment. They are an artist, a pianist, and have performed their own composition at Carnegie Hall. Although their talents lie in engineering, they are dismayed by the destructive environmental impacts of Capitalism and Neo-Colonialism and want to help the climate to recover. In their free time they love to read, play volleyball with friends, and go on walks in their local forests.
Amillia Keagle, School of Arts and Sciences/SAS Honors Program/School of Communication and Information/Douglass Residential College '26, is a Journalism and Media Studies major with minors in Creative Expression and the Environment; Women’s and Gender Studies. She leads the RU Recycling Campaign in Students for Environmental Awareness. She is a writer, editor, and photographer for The Trail, a student-run environmental newsletter in the Human Ecology Department. Her interests lie in covering stories often overlooked by mainstream media, emphasizing the resiliency and adaptation efforts of people globally.
Mildred López Escudero (she/her/ella) is originally from Perú. She is a Ph.D. student in the Spanish and Portuguese department. Mildred's research interests lie in storytelling, community theatre, and environmental justice. Mildred thinks storytelling is a powerful technique that encourages learning and strengthens connections. Mildred loves to go to the theatre, watch movies, play with cats, learn languages, spend time with family and friends, and walk on nature reserves at Essex County Park System or any place visiting.

Sam Carhuayano (ella/ellas), estudiante de tercer año de la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias, se especializa en estudios ambientales y sociología. Futura abogada ambientalista, aboga apasionadamente por la justicia social, en particular para hacer frente a las injusticias ambientales que afectan a las comunidades indígenas, negras y latinas marginadas.
