VoteBowl - Online Political Leaderboard and Voting App
Hackathon | UX Research, Strategy, Ideation, Design
VoteBowl is a design solution that enables secure online voting during the elections. In the process, it promotes more voter turnout and accessibility, and better political awareness through news, party profiles etc. We have strived to ensure the validity of the vote and the trust of the user through our lean intuitive prototype.
PROBLEM
Lower voter turnout due to the hassle of demanding registration process and the frequent elections
Citizens restrain from devoting their entire and day to physically go and register the vote
Lack of public confidence in voting machines and the security of paper ballots
Lack of public awareness about the leaders and their body of work or the issues they stand for
SOLUTION
Making a faster and simpler one - time process for digital authenticated voter registration
Ensuring validity of individual vote using digital signature like social security/pin/password
Having a digital document and a blockchain generated code against the vote to avoid tampering
Creating awareness by detailed view of the political leaders and their history of work along with current news in one platform
Notification and clear categorisation of parallel elections to confirm the citizens have clarity and take best choices
MY TEAM & ROLE
As part of UX, I worked upon competitive analysis, high level UX audit, user persona building and refining the Information Architecture and User Journey
As part of UI or Visual Design, I updated the design system based on current design standards and redefined the navigation based on customer journey
TIMELINE
This hackathon was completed in a span of 1 week's time
First 3 days were utilised in the discovery and ideation process
The next 3 days were used to build the wireframes, the final design and to compile it into a presentation for review
THE PROCESS
Understanding the Context
Currently, only a handful conduct online voting in the world with the leader being Estonia's I - Voting system. To gain more clarity into how they maintain security and transparency we researched on their process to implement the best learnings against the US Elections.
In Estonia, they are using Digital Signature or an Electronic Identification like a Digi - ID based on the smart card issued by the government and a QR code generated on the web Voter application. To give a digital signature, the Voter uses a signature tool which is a combination of the physical (e.g. chip card, SIM card) and the knowledge-based (PIN) parts. A Verification application allows the voter to review if the chosen encrypted vote has been received by the collector.

Competitive Analysis
We are also focusing on Educating the Voters of the current political figures and we want to achieve a singular platform for the voter to be informed about the same instead of multiple news vendors, social media, political websites etc. That also aids in understanding the public sentiment and a rating system so that the users are well informed about their choice. There are few apps in the Indian and US scenes which are solely focused on that - NextElection, Voatz, Neta App in India.
Understanding the Users
With limited access to real time user data, we conducted a quantitative survey among 8-9 peers to understand the parameters on which they select a leader to vote and their expectations out of the online voting platform. We wanted to identify the level of political awareness citizens have and if they would be able to trust an online voting platform.

User Profiles
Our two different voter persona are as follows based on the demography of the users who vote across the country
Redefining the User Flow
Inspired by Estonia's voting protocol and India's Aadhar revolution, we have built our user journey for when the user places the vote. User will be asked to login with their digital authentication number 'Digi - ID'. There are physical and knowledge based ways to verify it - with phone number, PIN, Password or fingerprint biometric for smart phones.
Once the first level of verification is done, the voter profile would be extracted. They would validate their personal information using 'Security Questions'. To avoid duplication, blockchain technology would be used. Against the voter's digital signature, an encrypted number i.e. 'Unique Voting ID' would be generated. On correct input of that, the user can select their party of choice and submit the vote.
A receipt would be generated like an invoice in e-commerce. To maintain transparency, the user can track their submitted vote - on which stage of approval or counting is it. If they exit the process midway, they would have to start again since each encrypted code generated against a process would be different and cannot be overridden.

THE DESIGN
Driving Political Awareness - Home Page
The home page shows the most relevant election and information regarding the same. Users nowadays consume bytes of information, hence we have highlighted some primary pieces of information for the leaders and their social positioning, in an easily scannable format. 'Stories' capture vital information in concise modes and this kind of content is a hit in the social media.
News Articles helps user build context on the current political scenario. Users can find content specific to categories. Social sharing and commenting is encouraged to build a community and draw in more users. Visually, the information has been laid out in distinct hierarchy.
Political Leader Profiles
On clicking on any political leaders from the home page leaderboard, it navigates to a detailed Political Leader Profile. This encourages user to be well informed before they cast the vote. Instead of researching across mutiple websites abd news shows, this would provide a consolidated data of their policies, bills, social activity, etc. These concise info would target the younger generation as well who have shorter attention span. The upvotes and downvotes on their policies show their social standing.
Simple & One - Time Verified Voting Process
The user base is widely diverse, hence the design is simple, contextual and intuitive to help users adopt to it easily. User logs in using a digital identification - Digi ID. That is followed by a second layer of personal information validation and an encrypted unique ID being generated. Against each person's vote, a digital signature and encryption is associated which cannot be overridden hence preventing duplication.
Post verification, they can select the political party of choice. Visual imagery and icons have been used for each leader and party symbol respectively, in cases of people remembering party logos but not the names. User confirms the vote that would be casted. On submitting, a digital document is created like an invoice. Validation, user control and consistency has been maintained throughout the screens.
