Designing a Corporate Wellness App in Covid times
Hackathon | UX Research, Strategy, Ideation, Design
Alpha Interactive Solutions’ is a large corporate firm with
20,000+ employees across India. As a part of their vision
for FY21, the Firm wishes to motivate their employees to
stay fit. Since employees are working from home now, their physical and mental health can get hampered which will then deduce their quality of work. Hence, the company want to invest in a solution that encourages them to take breaks with music, exercise, mediation etc.
PROBLEM
In remote work, employees are lacking routine and time management on a daily basis
Having blurred work and life boundaries
With no physical exertion of any kind, they can develop physical and mental health problems
Lack of motivation to interact with other employees hence social isolation
These factors make the employees resent the work schedule
SOLUTION
Building an app that can help keep track of work hours, screen time and nudges the user to take a break if it exceeds healthy levels
Provides array of activities that users can participate in like cycling, art, calligraphy and others under Exercise, Mindfulness, etc.
Motivates the employee to do physical activity with 'streaks' and 'leaderboards with rewards'
An automated chat bot to talk about their day to mitigate social isolation
A common platform to share their activities, progress, socialise and connect among the organisation
MY TEAM & ROLE
Worked individually as a UI/UX Designer for the Hackathon as a part of Deloitte Hiring Challenge
As part of UX, I worked upon competitive analysis, high level UX audit, user persona building and refining the Information Architecture and User Journey
As part of UI or Visual Design, I updated the design system based on current design standards and redefined the navigation based on customer journey
TIMELINE
This hackathon was completed in a span of 1 week's time
First 3 days were utilised in the discovery and ideation process
The next 3 days were used to build the wireframes, the final design and to compile it into a presentation for review
THE PROCESS
Competitive Analysis
There are few products(Strava, SproutAtWork) catering to remote workforce and engaging users to enhance physical fitness or activity and sharing with a community.
Common Points or Key Takeways :
- Scores or the Point System motivates the user
- Out of mundane activity like fun workshop, virtual events, are engaging
- Detailed statistics of their schedule and work with the ability to share it with the community
- Connecting the data across devices
Understanding the Users
The Target Audience we are working with are from 23 - 60 years of age. Young adults to experienced professionals who are used to going to office. They are trying to adapt to the adapt the virtual workforce.
To understand the user empathy and their current sentiments towards work, we conducted a Survey where we questioned them on basic of Working Hours, Stressful Factors, Ideas of Relaxation, Work life balance and the constraints of it.
Building the User Persona
User Story Mapping
Primary User Persona
Ideating through Mind Maps
To recommend the best suggestions to the employee, we need to keep track of their triggering parameters like "work hours", "sleep", "screen time", "steps for physical health " etc. Since this solution is for both physical and mental health, our app should provide opportunity to build a schedule, maintain a tracker for health activities, motivate mindfulness and relaxation practises and nudge to build a community. This should notify the user accordingly in case of unhealthy work hours.
Defining the User Journey
Considering our user, Jane, is a senior professional who is currently doing remote work, we laid out our user journey on different touchpoints through the day ensuring the employee's physical and mental well being are taken care of
THE DESIGN
Rewards & 'Time-off' Alerts through the Landing Page
We have tried to build a solution that integrates into a user's life as a habit that changes their lifestyle smoothly. The user logs in to this app with their Work email ID or Microsoft Teams credentials, thus capturing their work hours, screen time, meeting time etc.
The landing page shows their current points and steps to get a reward. Rewarding the user to unlock a new level among the employees motivates the user and enhances organic sharing. This page also showcases recent physical activity and any high/low in that trend. The Alert notified the user to take a break from work and suggests physical activity, they can dismiss it or add a reminder. User can easily view their entire stats over the week and as well as find curated content on this page.
Curated Content & Community Building
Based on user data, recommended and recent content is curated for them to lend a personalised experience, under the tabs of 'Exercise', 'Mindfulness', 'Art & Craft' etc. Each one has a Goal and Points system associated with it which they can share within their company's community. This makes the single - player experience into a social competition that makes this addictive. This community creates a space for employees to bond beyond their work life as a substitute for physical catchups at times of pandemic; & also integrate user persuasion. They can as well as add tasks in their work calendar to maintain a synched profile.
Workouts, User Badges and Leaderboards
We have seen with 'Streaks' in apps like Snapchat has been highly influential in consistently engaging the user. It represents effort and investment and users do not want to risk breaking it hence we incorporated '100 Days Streak' as example. Any kind of activity is recognised through different Badges(Perfectionist, Focussed, Champion, Achiever) which then they can share within their community. The workouts and exercises are also available on the same platform.
Persuasion through User Statistics
Instead of a tedious manual entry, the user data over a week is showcased with visually pleasing graphs that plugs in an intrinsic motivation in the user. They can as well set personalised goals to improve this self - help journey. The system also reciprocates back to the user through validation - rewards and points system.
The Design Language
We have used familiar verbiage throughout the application including the button - text like "Yes, Let's Go". This reduces the time employee spends on the app to learn and can easily adopt it across various gadgets in their lifestyle. The visual language carries a certain sense of professionalism but also maintains the tone of modern creative and informal.
🤯 Phew! You have reached the end of this project!
