Ayam Ketawa, often called “Laughing Chickens,” are a rare and captivating breed best known for the rooster’s unique crow, which carries a rhythmic, laughter‑like sound unlike any other poultry. Although the word “Ayam” means “chicken” in Indonesian and is sometimes linked to broader regional origins, the breed itself has deep cultural roots and a long history of being prized for its distinctive vocalizations.
These birds are not particularly large, with hens averaging around 4 pounds and roosters about 6 pounds, giving them a manageable size for a variety of setups. They are naturally hardy and tolerate cooler temperatures well, though they thrive most comfortably in mild climates—typically in the high sixties to low seventies. Active and alert, Ayam Ketawa excel as free‑range birds, preferring open space to forage rather than being confined to small enclosures.
