VISIONING PRESENTER - PDG TERRY GILBERT
Terry wandered from Coquille, Oregon into the desert of Idaho where he worked his way through Northwest Nazarene College by setting choker in the Oregon woods, working in Oregon sawmills, and serving as an orderly at the Nampa State School and Hospital in Nampa, Idaho in the 60s. He attained both a BA and MA from Northwest Nazarene College (now University).
A life-long public school educator, Terry started teaching English and history in 1967 in Marsing, a small agricultural village on the banks of the Snake River, 45 west of Boise. Terry taught at Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen Washington, and English at South Junior High in Nampa where he also served for three years as president of the Nampa Education Association.
In May 1969, he married Marsing home economics teacher, Carolyn Houts, whom he had met at NNC.
Terry became a member of the Blue Lakes – Twin Falls Rotary Club in 1987, serving as president in 1989-90. Upon moving to Boise, he joined the Rotary Club of Boise Sunrise where he served as president in 1999-2000.
Terry ascended to the office of Rotary International District 5400 Governor in 2010-11, culminating over twenty years of volunteer work and travel to Rotary International Conventions in places like Singapore, Barcelona, Chicago, Indianapolis and Montreal. Other non-Rotary trips have taken him to Russia, Ukraine, Spain, France, the Czech Republic and the Caribbean.
Terry served as the District Visioning Coordinator from 2009 to 2012. He was pleased that DG Jennifer Deroin asked him to coordinate the effort starting in 2019.
Terry retired from public education after forty years but has enjoyed mentoring students for over 10 years, judging in the Idaho Academic Decathlon and serving as moderator for his church.
Terry and Carolyn have two grown children, Cy who lives in Boise, and Tavia, who resides in Brooklyn, New York. Terry and Carolyn have no grandchildren and may be willing to adopt some of yours.
