CALCULUS PROJECT

STUDYING HUMAN POPULATION USING LOGISTIC FUNCTIONS

INTRODUCTION

With the rise in population in today's world, resources are being depleted at a faster rate.If not taken an action this may prove to be disastrous. Therefore,it has become essential to model population in order to prepare ourselves for the future. But the question that may arise in your mind may be,"What is population modeling?"

But before answering this question let us first understand what do mean by a population model.A model is defined as a simplification of the real world system. It gives you a better understanding of how the real world may act in a particular situation.Models allow you to understand the complex interactions and processes that take place in the real world.Theoretical models such as the logistic population growth model have been created in order to articulate ideas about population growth and dynamics.Population modeling is a method of studying population growth using various mathematical equations and creating a vivid picture of the future.

Secondly, let us understand what logistic functions are.Basically logistic functions are also known Richard's functions, which were developed with the prime motive of studying growth models. These functions are extensions of the sigmoid functions and their graphs have a characteristic S-shape.Logistic functions have various applications in almost every field. They not only help us to study human population but also help in curing cancer, studying economics, calculating heat, logistic regression and even in linguistics.

ABSTRACT

Through this project I would like to throw some light upon how the availability of resources affect the population growth and how things must be planned if we do not want to face a catastrophe.
