Encompassing all major and minor world religions, from ancient cults to modern faiths, this work covers both religious and secular pilgrimage sites. Compiled by experts who have authored numerous books on pilgrimage and are pilgrims in their own right, the entries will appeal to students, scholars, and general readers.

People from the Beit Tehila Congregation ("Teaching the Hebrew roots of the Christian faith") in Brandon, Fla., piled out of a tour bus, posed in front of the embassy wall plaque and sang the Israeli and U.S. national anthems.

COMMON AREAS: Seventeen 2 and 3 story wood and stucco buildings are arranged on two levels of a 3-acre site divided by a drainage creek and wooden bridge. The grounds are unusually attractive, with numerous trees; terraced planting beds behind Sonoma Stone walls a community garden, and a variety of outdoor leisure areas. These include an arbor and chess table, lawns and a terrace enclosed with stone and redwood wall seats and planter. Benches and tables are varnished in redwood.

Abel. Enoch. Noah. Abraham. Sarah. These all died in faith; not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off -- and being persuaded of them, and embracing them -- and confessing that they were but strangers and pilgrims on the Earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek another country. And truly if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to return. But they desired a better country -- that is, a heavenly one: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: and he hath prepared for them a city.

William Bradford (Roger Rees): And so they left that goodly and pleasant city which had been their resting place for near twelve years; but they knew they were pilgrims, and looked not much on those things, but lift up their eyes to the heavens, their dearest country, and quieted their spirits.

Narrator: The Mayflower and the Speedwell had finally weighed anchor -- and were just beginning to make headway when to their shock and dismay the Speedwell began to wallow and take on water.

Narrator: Over the next 18 months, as the pilgrims struggled to stay alive and keep their group together, they would face staggering new challenges, on not one but three fronts simultaneously: economic and demographic, as they struggled desperately to make ends meet, and to contend with the influx of what William Bradford called profane and disorderly outsiders; but also military, as it soon became terrifying clear that their alliance with the Wampanoags would not be easily replicated with other groups in the region. The struggle with those challenges would change them forever.

Narrator: Ominous rumors had been swirling around the settlement for months -- first that the Narragansetts, then that the Massachusetts -- were planning to attack, when in early December, William Bradford ordered the construction of an eight-foot-high timber wall around the entire plantation for protection. Work on the massive fortification had just been completed when three new ships, also sent by Thomas Weston, appeared in the harbor. Their arrival would trigger the darkest crisis in the Pilgrims' history.

Susan Hardman Moore, Historian: I wonder, with Bradford. He has had to deal with so much human frailty -- so many human foibles in his life as governor -- that, perhaps, the sense of being a pilgrim bound for heaven, rather than a pilgrim who will reach their new Jerusalem on Earth, is borne in on him very strongly towards the end of his life. I think there may be something of that verse from Hebrews 11 -- "We are pilgrims and strangers in the world" -- comes to his heart.

The women have inquired after the welfare of those they befriended during their pilgrimage and Rev. Faulkner in New Jersey has assured them that their friends are safe, so far. But in a letter to the pilgrims, Faulkner said the people there are frightened and worried about what will happen in coming months.

This clay cone dates to ca. 1950 B.C., probably from the temenos wall area of the temple of Gula, at Isin in modern Iraq. The following collation was produced in 2006 by Professor John D. Fortner, retired Professor of Hebrew Bible.

Essentially it is a commemorative inscription put into the structure of the wall to extol the greatness of the king, Ishme-Dagan, who granted release from taxes and military service while the people were building the temple.

This is about half of a fairly standard sized mudbrick. (Photo #1 shows a wall from the 14th century B.C. Beth-Shemesh). The building material is fairly easy to make, consisting of mud mixed with straw that helps reduce the shrinkage of the mud as it dries. The mixture is dumped into a rectangular mold (referred to in Nahum 3:14*), which is then removed and the brick dries in the sun. The straw also improves the insulation capacity of the bricks, forming dead air pockets in the product. The provision of straw, of course, was one of the points of that Pharaoh withheld in his attempt to punish Israel. The Israelites were forced to search elsewhere to secure the needed straw (cf. Exodus 5).

The bilbil is a unique vessel dating to the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1400-1300 B.C.). Its shape has intrigued scholars for years, but it has been suggested that the vessel was used to store and transport an opiate derivative dissolved in either honey or wine. If the vessel is held upside down, the unique shape somewhat replicates that of the poppy from which the opium comes (compare with the poppy pods in the display). Note the collar on the stem, coordinating with the painted white lines on the vessel. The white lines on the bulb represent incisions on the body of the plant by which the harvesters collect the latex, incising the bulb to permit the latex to ooze out (note the photograph on the back wall of the cabinet). Residue tests on some of these vessels have confirmed that at least some of them were used to store an opiate product.

The pilgrims from Christ Lutheran Church, DuBois, are shown on the Mount of Olives overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem on a hazy day. The Dome of the Rock is prominent in the background as is the eastern wall of the Old City of Jerusalem. Front from left: Mahmet Gurgen, Nora Nealon, Susan Hauser, Wendy Wells, Linda London, Gary Bogle, Debbie Gillung, Jerry Watson, Lily Brubaker, Debbie Brubaker, Ginny Schott, Jan Deitman, and Joann Krukow. Back from left: Jim Nealon, Ernie Hauser, Darwin London, Chris Luckenbill, Donna Bush, Pastor Amy Godshall-Miller, Joe Krukow, Pastor John Miller, Tom Schott, and tour guide Matt Churchill.

Like pilgrims for centuries before, the trip centered on the life of Jesus, although it could not be followed in chronological order while the tour went from the Sea of Galilee in the north to the Dead Sea in the south, with a culmination of four days in Jerusalem. Churches mark many of the locations where Jesus walked, thanks to Helena (246-330), mother of Constantine the Great, who toured the Holy Land in the Fourth Century seeking to verify locations as related in the Bible. Many of the church structures remain, some surrounded by archeological excavations.

2. Local legends hold that when a silver mining crew was trapped underground, el Santo Nio presented himself to them, offered them water, and guided them out. If they got lost while they tried to escape the silver mine, the holy child would guide them in the right direction. It is because of this that many pilgrims believe that el Santo Nio de Atocha specializes in helping individuals who find themselves locked in an emotional or spiritual trap (e.g., coming out, mental illness, repressed memories). be457b7860
