I recorded room ambience at -50db and I'm not sure how loud it actually should be (in relation to other sounds). I realized that I started to use this to mask the noise of foley recordings, then I started noise reduction of foley so I can lower the ambience cause it was too noisy with everything combined. So, my question is: how should I record ambience, at what levels, and how is noise treated in those recordings?

Get your dlog levels right, and everything else gets mixed according to that. There's no specific level for ambience (or foley for that matter), it is simply mixed to sit naturally in relation to the dlog. It always frustrated me when people gave me that answer, but it's pretty much the only right answer for that question.

I would record room tone at the same level as I have recorded the dialog or whatever I was recording in that room. Then the room will sound the same as in the background of the thing I wanted to record.

Also I have no set rules for what gets bussed out of the plugin into my DAW for additional processing, early on I followed some silly principles of keeping either everything in the plugin or everything in the DAW, but I find it works well to keep my primary mix in the plugin going to the main output, then buss out a bunch of aux channels into my DAW so I can add more expensive reverbs and different types of harmonic distortions/compression before mixing it all together in a main group track. Also I will have a set of just room mic auxes going out into the DAW for all kinds of silly tricks, including running room mics through additional reverbs. No rules, just do whatever sounds and feels good.

THe Ns1 is a Noise reduction plugin and great at it but i Somehow found another use for it

I was able to remove extra room Ambience form a voice with this plugin

I coupled with a Q10 reducing around 50 ,60 ,80 hz with the narrowest Q.

I hope we can see a Room Reverb ( Ambience) reduction plugin from Waves team soon.

But till then im doing fine with this Duo

This is a simple recording of open air white noise of a quite room. I've used this in quite digital passes in some of my original music to help make the digital instrument sound a little less sterile. This is a full unedited take. You will want to crop the start and end sections so you don't here me cutting the recorder on and off ect. I hope you can use this if you need it!

For example, I have two narrow cabinets/dressers in our living room. I recently found a new pair of table lamps that are perfect for these two spots (the new brass and white lamps featured in this post are the Brynn Table Lamps from Mitzi by Hudson Valley Lighting.) They are so pretty and a great compact size and shape for these narrow cabinets.

We have no overhead lighting in our living room and no wall lights, so it gets very dark at night! I would love to add ceiling fixtures and install sconces around the room someday, but for now we solely rely on our lamps.

My contractor bought the lightbulbs for our overhead lights in our kitchen and they are bright white, but it makes the mood feel like we are in an operating room! Consequently, I never turn them on. I always prefer cozy wall sconces with the warm light bulbs.

I love the warm ambiance lamps give off also. I never use our overhead lighting in the living room or the bedrooms. I have several lamps throughout our home and they are all used way more than the overhead lighting,. I think it creates such a warm and cozy environment,

Never met a lamp I did not love. I have to remind myself that enough is enough as not every flat surface needs one, but early morning and early evenings are fun to get that cozy feeling from just the right light in the room.

Do you need to match color of lamps/shades in a room? I have a cream colored lamp with a tad lighter shade. I love the size and shape of the lamps you have but being white am not sure if it would work. Most of the room is navy with shades of cream. Thanks.

A few years ago, you had a large white birch tree for your holiday tree. I bought some smaller ones and I keep them in my bedroom in the corner. Of course I decorate them for the holidays, but most of the time, they are just the trees. I love using the timer in the winter, so there is soft light when I walk into the room.

In some rooms, I just small lamps with a 40 watt bulb that I leave on all day/night. It costs the same as using a wall timer and a stronger light bulb. But, it is nice to have the soft light in the corner during the winter months or on stormy days.

Let me know when you find one, please. Love lamps, love how just the right one ties in a whole room. But I have quite the collection in the attic. I also love putting a new shade on a lamp so that it changes the whole look. I have one lamp in particular that is a classic. It has worn more styles than you can imagine but always looks great. I also loved using pink light bulbs back in the day when you could get a regular incandescent bulb. They gave the room a soft glow without yellowing everything.

I watch a lot of ambience videos on YouTube. Videos with scenes like the following:

--Scenes of 17th century cottage room with a log fire flickering away and raining hitting the window, of course with sound effects from the fire and rain.

or

--In the middle of a forest with tree leaves blowing in the wind and rain falling down hitting a lake, again with the wind and rain sound affects.

I would like to have a go and create a scene myself but I would like your advice on the software(s) to create such a scene.

I've dabbled with Blender, creating the famous 'doughnut' visual, however I find Blender quite complex, I guess it would be due to it being industrial software. I wonder if there is software that is better suited to my particular aim and much easier to learn. I imagine Blender is, to me, as complicated as it is due to the sheer volume of capability it has, but I only want to create a static scene with rain/wind/fire sound/movements.

This would be a hobby and I'm not looking to enter the 3D employment world - hence seeking software that quick/easier but meets my needs. It's just a bit of fun.

I do aim to upload it to YouTube myself and seek feedback and to know if it was enjoyed. Who knows, if this takes off I may get monetized.

Use lamps and fittings with down lighting, as this gives off a soft glow perfect for when you want to create a cosier atmosphere at night. If you have a dining area in your living room this is a great place to install lighting above. The lighting will help to zone the area away from the rest of the room and is also practical when eating at night.

Large ornate mirrors make great focal points in a space and will trick the eye. A good tip when hanging a mirror is to try and place it across from a window. This will bounce the light back into the room and make it feel much more open.

Rugs are great because not only are they very practical they can also dramatically alter the way a room feels. There are so many options when choosing a rug for your room to consider, allowing you to add more colour or pattern to a room or soften the look of bare floors.

What draws me to these ambience videos isn't just the sound, but also the uncanny valley visuals. Unlike Chilled Cow's simple graphics (the often-memed "study girl"), the images in these videos look real, but something's not quite right. The lights are more twinkly than in real life; a small candle's flame a little too dense and large; a coffee cup hovers slightly too big on a faraway table; a cityscape in the background looks oversaturated and almost watercolor. Smooth surfaces like tabletops look too smooth, as though they've been put under a flattering filter. Where do these visuals come from, and why do they look this way?

There's overlap between the 3D art world and the YouTube ambience niche, it turns out. "The artwork I use on my channel is a collaborative effort between myself and other 3D artists," said Autumn McLean, who has been posting ambience videos to Autumn Cozy since 2018. Self-taught from video tutorials, McLean makes some of these environments herself, using the free and open-source 3D computer graphics software Blender. Then she uses Final Cut Pro to add motion, and records and mixes audio layers for the soundscape. But because a single scene can take her weeks to design, she often commissions and seeks out art from other creators in order to keep up a regular posting schedule; the "Rainy Day Coffee Shop" video that I like, for example, features art by 3D visualizer Giuseppe Milana.

YouTube relaxation videos tend to have the commonality of toying with the idea of being in a different place. Long videos shot at beaches give you a sense of a tropical vacation, and city walk videos allow you to feel as though you're walking through New York at night, when the streets were still bustling. Picking up around 2017, the trend of "music from another room," in which songs are slightly muffled as though they are playing in the distance, gave rise over time to even more imaginative iterations: "Put Your Head on My Shoulder," but it's in another room and it's raining; "This Is How I Disappear" by My Chemical Romance, but it's just Gerard Way's vocals in a large cathedral; "Work Song" by Hozier, but you're lying face down in a forest while it rains (there's clearly a sense of fun here). Simpler, non-YouTube options like Rainy Mood have long let us add texture to our personal soundscapes.

In non-pandemic times, ambience videos provided windows into other worlds or calming background noise for studying and working. In 2021, they also fill a very of-the-moment desire: escape. "Ambience videos basically create an immersive sensory experience, and people do generally use them as a tool to change their emotional or physical energy levels," said Earnest Pettie, the trends insights lead on the culture and trends team at YouTube. Since the start of the pandemic last year, Pettie's team has found that more people have turned to videos as a form of self-care. 0852c4b9a8
