Learn Power BI from Scratch in 2025: A Beginner’s Guide

What is Power BI?
Power BI is a business intelligence (BI) tool developed by Microsoft that helps users analyze, clean and transform data, create interactive reports, and build visually appealing dashboards. Very simply we can say using Power BI we can transform raw data into powerful insights.
By looking at the below image you will see that there are so many things to learn in Power BI. But Don't worry! You are not too late to start. In this blog, we'll break down each key concept step by step, making it easy for you to get started on your Power BI journey.

Let's download PBI Desktop with me. Go to this link and download and install Power BI into your computer. If you have a microsoft account signin to the app from the top right corner, No account no problem, You can still explore and learn the basics of Power BI without signing in.

Roadmap to learn Power BI

As a self-taught Power BI Business Intelligence Analyst with four years of industry experience, I believe there’s no single “right” or “wrong” way to start learning Power BI. Everyone’s journey is unique, and what matters most is understanding the core building blocks of Power BI.

In my experience, Power BI revolves around three key components:

- Power Query – The backbone of data transformation and cleaning.
- DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) – The formula language that powers calculations and measures.
- Visualizations – The art of turning raw data into meaningful insights with interactive dashboards.

When I first started learning Power BI, I simply imported an Excel dataset without knowing anything about data cleaning or transformations. I had no idea about Power Query or DAX—I just dragged and dropped fields onto the canvas and started building visualizations. It was all about exploring and experimenting, and that hands-on approach helped me get comfortable with the tool.  I would like share my first PBI Dashboard with you all. Stay tuned!

You can follow the same approach to familiarize yourself with the tool—start by importing a dataset, dragging and dropping fields, and experimenting with visualizations. However, as an experienced Business Intelligence Analyst, I highly recommend that beginners focus on Power Query and DAX early on. Why? Because if you truly want to excel as a Power BI Data Analyst, you need to master data shaping and transformation in Power Query and create accurate, insightful calculations using DAX. These skills are essential for delivering meaningful insights to stakeholders and making data-driven decisions that matter.
