Call for Artists: "Rhythm, Rhapsody, and Rap" Exhibition

In-person Exhibition run: February 12- 16
Virtual exhibition: February 20 - March 20 ( selective artists and works will be featured)
Artists' compensation for participating: $50 plus media acknowledgment.

Overview:
ROMAC invites artists to contribute to "Rhythm, Rhapsody, and Rap," an exhibition that traverses the rich history of Hip Hop and its intrinsic links to Black history. This immersive experience seeks to blend visual and auditory elements, celebrating hip-hop's cultural, political, and artistic facets, from its African roots to its worldwide resonance. Space is limited to 10 - 15 artists for this exhibition. We are looking for artworks that resonate with the following themes:
Exhibition Sections and Artwork Categories:
Rhythmic Roots:
Artwork Focus: Celebrating the African origins of rhythm. We are looking for artwork that connects with traditional African drums, spiritual music, and the evolution of these rhythms in Black music.
Acceptable Submissions: Paintings, photographs, digital art depicting African drums, spiritual dances, and musical gatherings; narrative art that tells the story of these elements influencing Hip Hop.
Rhapsody of Resistance:
Artwork Focus: Capturing the role of music in the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements and its parallels in Hip Hop.
Acceptable Submissions: Visual art that draws connections between these movements and Hip Hop; artwork inspired by iconic songs, speeches, and symbols of empowerment from these eras.
The Rise of Rap (Hip Hop Timeline):
Artwork Focus: A chronological exploration of Hip Hop’s emergence in the 1970s - present.
Acceptable Submissions: Artworks depicting key figures, fashion, clothing, early rap battles, block parties, and significant moments from the era.
Golden Era Glories:
Artwork Focus: Celebrating the 1980s and 1990s as the golden era of Hip Hop.
Acceptable Submissions: Artworks showcasing classic albums, fashion trends, and cultural icons of the era; images that reflect the fashion of these decades.
Contemporary Confluence, including Afro-futurism:
Artwork Focus: Features contemporary and Afro-futuristic themes in Hip Hop culture.
Acceptable Submissions: Artwork by contemporary Black artists and pieces incorporating Afro-futuristic elements; digital art, paintings, and reflecting modern Hip Hop influences.
Additional Categories:
Graffiti and Street Art: Works that embody the spirit and visual language of Hip Hop graffiti and street art.
Black Hair in Hip Hop Culture: Artworks that explore the significance and evolution of Black hairstyles in Hip Hop culture.
Music and Beats: Visual representations of Hip Hop music, DJs, and beat-making art. Audio, poetry. music, and video art that can be shared by QR code.
Poetry that connects with the exhibit theme can be printed on 11x14, 16, x20, or 18x24 boards or framed.
Textile Art and Fashion: From Africa to Hip Hop
Submission Guidelines:
The exhibition will feature 10 - 15 artists.
Artworks must be ready to hang and align with the theme of the exhibition.
Include briefly describing the artwork and how it connects to the exhibition theme.
Artists may submit 1-2 pieces that connect with different sections.
For each artwork, include: Title, Materials, Dimensions, Year, and Price (or NFS – not for sale)
Exhibition Goals:
This exhibition aims not only to showcase artistic talent within the realm of hip-hop and Black culture but also to educate and inspire a diverse audience about this influential genre's rich history and evolution. We seek artworks that are powerful, thought-provoking, and reflective of the depth and diversity of Hip Hop culture.
