Oral Health of Your Child and Role of Pediatric Dentist

Typically, a pediatric dentist has the capability to deal with complex dental health issues. Most of the times, children are taken to the dental offices in order to get their teeth examined and cleaned. However, there are many cases in which the complex oral treatment is required. Hence, a dentist needs to be pretty much ready to deal with these scenarios.

Oral health problems

Not visiting the dentist every now and then or lack of oral care at home can lead children to heave a number of oral health issues. These issues include tooth decay and other oral infections. Now, it is quite unfortunate that parents normally do not take care of their children’s oral health because children are unable to tell the parents about their oral health concerns. Unless a child starts showing signs of extreme pain due to any oral or dental infection, parents are usually unaware about the existence of any issue. Sometimes, the issue becomes so severe that the child may need tooth extraction. This is the major reason that dentists usually suggest parents to bring their kids for dental check after every six months.

Now, it would be worth mentioning the issues with children’s dental health that dentists treat.

Dental decay

The treatment of dental decay first involves removal of decayed area. The decayed area is usually the infected portion which doesn’t do any good to the oral health if it stays with the tooth. Therefore, the dentist first removes the decayed portion and then cleans the area. After cleaning, the portion is filled in order to complete restoration. The procedure is usually quicker than what’s done with the adults.

Dental infections

There can be many types of dental infections. The treatment first involves use of antibiotics which clean up the infection. However, the source of infection still needs to be dealt with. Therefore, the next procedure is usually the root canal treatment. However, it is pretty difficult for the children to sit still for a long time. Thus, the dentists may decide to put child to sleep before starting the process.

Extraction

The baby tooth can become severely infected. In such situations, the dentist may decide to extract the tooth. Severity of infection and health of the tooth root are the factors to be taken into consideration. However, you have to make sure that your child is being given the pain medication after the treatment.

With all the situations mentioned above, it becomes necessary to take your child to the dental visit.
