If you want immersive, high-fidelity audio for silent piano practice or studio monitoring with an open-back design, choose Roland RH-A7-BK; if you need a rugged, professional input cable to connect your guitar or bass to a wireless body pack transmitter, choose Tjernlund Audio-Technica Pro Instrument.
These two products sit at opposite ends of the musical equipment spectrum. One is a pair of over-ear headphones designed for listening, while the other is a specialized coaxial cable designed for transmitting signal. The Roland unit excels in comfort and acoustic openness, making it ideal for long sessions where you need to hear the nuance of your instrument without isolation fatigue. Its trade-off is that it is wired only, limiting mobility unless you have a stationary setup nearby. The Tjernlund Audio-Technica option offers exceptional durability and signal integrity for live performance or stage use, ensuring your tone reaches the transmitter without interference. Its trade-off is that it serves strictly as a connection point and has no audio output capabilities on its own. If you are looking for the best open ear headphones for flights or general travel listening, the Roland fits that bill perfectly due to its breathable design. However, if your goal is noise cancelling headphones for flights, neither product is designed for active noise cancellation, though the Roland's open nature will let ambient sound in. For those seeking the best bluetooth earbuds for flights, you will find neither of these options suitable, as both rely on physical connections rather than wireless technology.
• Roland RH-A7-BK: Best strength is the 40mm dynamic driver providing a wide dynamic range in a lightweight, suede-padded package; biggest trade-off is the lack of wireless connectivity and open-air design which lets outside noise in.
• Tjernlund Audio-Technica Pro Instrument: Best strength is the heavy-duty braided copper shielding and dual-jacket construction for superior signal integrity in harsh environments; biggest trade-off is that it is purely a cable with no audio playback features.
• Who each pick is for: Choose the Roland for pianists and students who need comfort during hours of practice; choose the Tjernlund for guitarists and bassists connecting instruments to wireless systems on stage.
The Roland RH-A7-BK is engineered specifically for the modern digital pianist who refuses to compromise on tone quality. It utilizes a 40mm dynamic driver housed within an open-air enclosure, a design choice that prioritizes natural sound reproduction over isolation. This means when you play, you hear the full character of the instrument, from the shimmering highs to the commanding bass, exactly as the manufacturer intended for their piano range. The open-back format is not just about sound; it is about context. During a lesson, this design allows a student to hear their teacher's instructions clearly without having to remove bulky headphones, creating a seamless learning environment.
Comfort is a major selling point for anyone planning extended usage. With an item weight of 16 ounces, the headphones are surprisingly light for over-ear models. They feature soft suede-finish earpads that provide a luxurious feel against the skin, preventing the sweating and pressure often associated with closed-back monitors. The secure-fit design ensures they stay in place whether you are playing a vigorous piece or sitting still for a long rehearsal. This makes the RH-A7-BK an excellent companion for daily practice routines where you might wear them for hours at a time without fatigue.

However, this product is not for everyone. Because it uses an open-air design, it does not block out external noise. If you are trying to practice in a noisy apartment or a busy coffee shop, the music will compete with the environment, and people around you will hear what you are playing. Furthermore, the connectivity is strictly wired via a 3.5 mm jack. There is no Bluetooth, meaning you cannot wirelessly stream music from a phone or tablet directly to the headphones. You must be tethered to your instrument or a mixer. If you need the best bluetooth earbuds for flights or mobile freedom, this wired solution will feel restrictive. It is a tool for focused, stationary listening where audio fidelity and interaction matter more than portability.
The Tjernlund Audio-Technica Pro Instrument is a specialized piece of hardware designed for the working musician who needs reliability above all else. Unlike the headphones mentioned earlier, this product is a professional input cable, specifically built to bridge the gap between an electric guitar, bass, or similar instrument and an Audio-Technica body pack transmitter. It features a straight 1/4" output jack on one end and a screw-down chalk-style connector on the other, ensuring a secure lock that won't accidentally disconnect during a performance. This specific configuration is vital for touring musicians or gigging artists who cannot afford a loose connection mid-set.
Durability is the core philosophy behind this cable's construction. It employs a braided copper shield that protects the signal quality, effectively eliminating radio frequency noise that can plague wireless systems. The dual-jacket design is built to stand up to tough use, whether it is being dragged across a stage floor, stepped on by boots, or packed tightly into a gear bag. With a length of 36 inches (0.9 meters), it provides extra flexibility for ease of use, allowing enough slack for movement without the risk of tripping or pulling on the transmitter. The connectors themselves are high-quality components that ensure superior signal integrity and outstanding strain relief, meaning the cable can handle the physical stress of regular transport and setup.
This product is strictly for musicians who already own a compatible wireless system and need a robust link to get their signal out. It is not a standalone audio device; it does not produce sound, nor does it offer any monitoring capabilities. If you are looking for noise cancelling headphones for flights to block out engine drone, this cable will do nothing for you. Similarly, if you are a pianist looking for the best open ear headphones for flights to listen to recordings, this is not the right tool. It is a utility item, a critical link in the chain that preserves the purity of your tone from the instrument to the transmitter. It is for the player who values signal clarity and physical toughness over convenience or audio playback features.
• Best for battery life → Neither product requires batteries for operation; the Roland is passive with wired power, and the Tjernlund is a passive cable.
• Best for comfort during long sessions → Roland RH-A7-BK, thanks to its lightweight 16-ounce build and soft suede earpads designed for hours of wear.
• Best for signal protection and durability → Tjernlund Audio-Technica Pro Instrument, featuring braided copper shielding and a dual-jacket design for stage rigors.
• Best for interactive lessons → Roland RH-A7-BK, as the open-air design allows you to hear your instructor without removing the headphones.
• Best for wireless guitar setups → Tjernlund Audio-Technica Pro Instrument, specifically engineered to connect instruments to body pack transmitters securely.
• Best for portable wireless listening → Neither; both products are wired solutions and do not support Bluetooth connectivity.
• Best for blocking outside noise → Neither; the Roland is open-back and lets sound in, while the Tjernlund is a cable and offers no isolation.
• Best value for audio fidelity → Roland RH-A7-BK, offering a wide dynamic range and 40mm drivers for rich, nuanced sound reproduction.
In my opinion, if you are buying these items for personal enjoyment or travel, the Roland RH-A7-BK is the clear winner because it actually delivers an audio experience. It is one of the few options that combines genuine comfort with high-fidelity sound, making it perfect for serious practice or even for travelers who want the best open ear headphones for flights to enjoy music without isolating themselves completely. The Tjernlund Audio-Technica Pro Instrument is an indispensable tool for a specific job, but it cannot replace a headphone or a monitor. Unless you are a guitarist with a specific wireless body pack setup, the cable is not a purchase you would make for general use. For almost any scenario involving listening to music, I recommend the Roland for its thoughtful design and sonic performance.
No, the Roland RH-A7-BK has an open-back design which allows outside noise to pass through freely. It is not designed for noise cancelling headphones for flights and will not isolate you from engine or cabin noise.
No, this cable is specifically designed to connect an instrument to an Audio-Technica body pack transmitter with a chalk-style connector. It is not a standard instrument-to-amp cable and will not work with standard amplifier inputs.
Neither product supports Bluetooth. The Roland is a wired headphone with a 3.5 mm jack, and the Tjernlund is a wired coaxial cable. If you need the best bluetooth earbuds for flights, you will need to look elsewhere.
The Roland includes a stereo mini cable and a plug adaptor, but the Tjernlund cable is explicitly engineered for heavy-duty use with a dual-jacket design and braided copper shielding to withstand rough handling on stage.
