If you want an open, airy soundstage that keeps you connected to the room while practicing digital piano or engaging in conversation, choose Roland RH-A7-BK; if you need absolute sound isolation and studio-grade frequency precision for mixing or working in noisy environments, choose Audio-Technica ATH-M70x.
• Roland RH-A7-BK: Its greatest strength is the open-air design that offers natural, nuanced sound without isolating you from your surroundings; however, it lacks noise isolation entirely. This pick is for students and players who need to hear their teacher or room acoustics while playing.
• Audio-Technica ATH-M70x: Its biggest asset is the closed-back circumaural design providing excellent sound isolation and a massive 5 Hz to 40 kHz frequency range; the trade-off is that it blocks out the world completely, which can feel claustrophobic for casual listening. This pick is for professionals needing critical listening accuracy in loud settings.
The Roland RH-A7-BK is built with a specific philosophy in mind: making silent practice feel like playing through a high-end speaker system without the physical barrier of sealed cups. The open-air design is not just a feature; it is the core of the experience. By allowing sound to escape naturally rather than trapping it inside earcups, these headphones create a sense of space that feels less like wearing gear and more like standing near a monitor. This makes them an exceptional choice for anyone looking for the best on ear headphones for work from home situations where you might need to take calls, chat with family, or simply stay aware of your environment while listening to music or backing tracks.
At 16 ounces, the weight distribution feels substantial yet manageable for long sessions. The suede-finish earpads are designed for a luxurious feel, ensuring that even after hours of wear, the pressure points remain comfortable. If you are a pianist using modern digital instruments, the 40mm dynamic drivers deliver a wide dynamic range that captures everything from shimmering highs to commanding bass without sounding muddy. The fact that they do not offer active or passive noise control means you are always hearing the room, which is perfect for interactive learning or collaborative jamming where you need to hear instructions or other musicians clearly.

However, this openness comes with a clear limitation. If your goal is to block out a barking dog, a crying baby, or the hum of an air conditioner, these will not help you. They are wired only, utilizing a standard 3.5 mm jack, so you must have a direct line to your device. You also lose the ability to "tune out" the world when you put them on. This makes the RH-A7-BK an ideal tool for focused practice in a quiet room, but a poor choice if you are trying to isolate yourself in a busy household or a chaotic office. They are best for those who value the natural acoustic interaction over total immersion.
The Audio-Technica ATH-M70x takes a completely different approach, prioritizing accuracy and isolation above all else. These are professional studio monitor headphones engineered for people who need to hear every detail of a recording, from the deepest sub-bass to the highest transient spikes. With proprietary 45-millimeter large aperture drivers tuned to reproduce frequencies from 5 Hz to 40,000 Hz, the clarity is unmatched. If you are searching for the best head phones for work from home because you are mixing audio, mastering tracks, or doing audio forensics, this is the tool that delivers the necessary fidelity. The metal components and robust construction suggest a durability that can withstand the rigors of daily professional use.
The closed-back design is its defining characteristic. The circumaural fit contours around the ears to provide excellent sound isolation in loud environments. This means if you are in a coffee shop, a busy living room, or a shared apartment, you will not hear anything outside the headphones, and no one else will hear what you are listening to. The 90-degree swiveling earcups add versatility, allowing for easy one-ear monitoring, a crucial feature for DJs or producers who need to check a cue while keeping one ear open to the main mix. The inclusion of a carrying case further signals that this is a piece of equipment meant to be transported between studios or locations.
The trade-off here is the same as any closed-back system: the potential for a "closed-in" feeling and the lack of spatial awareness regarding your actual surroundings. Because the isolation is so effective, you might miss a doorbell or a person entering the room unless you take the headphones off. Additionally, the sensitivity of 97 dB combined with the wide frequency response means you will hear flaws in recordings that cheaper headphones would smooth over. This is fantastic for a mixer but potentially fatiguing for someone just wanting to listen to pop music casually for eight hours straight. It is a serious tool for serious work, not a casual accessory.

• Best for sound isolation → Audio-Technica ATH-M70x, thanks to its closed-back circumaural design that effectively seals out external noise.
• Best for natural room acoustics → Roland RH-A7-BK, whose open-air format lets you hear the room and interact with others while listening.

• Best for comfort during long sessions → Roland RH-A7-BK, featuring breathable materials and a lightweight build specifically noted for extended playing.
• Best for durability and transport → Audio-Technica ATH-M70x, constructed with key metal components and including a protective carrying case.

In my opinion, the choice between these two depends entirely on your primary environment and how you intend to use them for work from home. If your workspace is quiet and you value the ability to talk to colleagues or family without taking off your headphones, the Roland RH-A7-BK is the superior choice for its open, natural presentation and comfort. However, if your home environment is noisy or you require the precise, isolated monitoring needed for critical audio work, the Audio-Technica ATH-M70x is the only logical path. I would buy the Audio-Technica ATH-M70x if my priority was getting accurate work done without distraction, as the isolation and frequency response are objectively more powerful tools for professional focus.
