If you want professional studio-grade audio monitoring for your Mac with a wired connection and a balanced tone, choose Roland RH-5; if you need a dedicated bone conduction device for swimming with built-in storage and open-ear safety, choose Rhyfell Bone Conduction Swimming. These two products occupy completely different lanes of the audio market, serving distinct purposes that often confuse buyers looking for a single "best" solution. One is a tool for precision listening in a controlled environment, while the other is an active accessory designed for high-intensity movement and water immersion. Understanding this fundamental split is the only way to make a rational choice without wasting money on gear that doesn't fit your workflow or lifestyle.
• Roland RH-5: Its greatest strength is the 40mm dynamic driver delivering a natural, balanced frequency response from 10 Hz to 22,000 Hz, ideal for critical listening on a Mac. The trade-off is its wired nature and lack of waterproofing, making it unsuitable for active sports or wet environments. This pick is for musicians and audio enthusiasts who prioritize sound fidelity over portability.
• Rhyfell Bone Conduction Swimming: Its biggest advantage is the IP68 waterproof rating allowing full submersion up to 5 meters, combined with 32GB of internal storage for phone-free swimming. The trade-off is the open-ear design which sacrifices deep bass isolation and relies on bone conduction rather than traditional acoustic drivers. This pick is for athletes who swim, run, or surf and need situational awareness.
• Verdict: Choose the Roland for your desk and the Rhyfell for your pool.
The Roland RH-5 is engineered specifically for the musician, producer, or audiophile who needs to hear exactly what is happening in a mix. When I think about pairing headphones with a MacBook for music production, I am usually looking for accuracy, not gimmicks. The RH-5 delivers a dynamic yet balanced tone through its 40mm drivers, covering a frequency range from 10 Hz to 22,000 Hz. This specification suggests a device capable of reproducing the low-end warmth of a digital piano and the crisp highs of a snare drum or cymbal without coloration. For someone using their laptop as a primary instrument interface, this flat response is non-negotiable. You cannot trust your mixing decisions if the headphones are artificially boosting the bass or cutting the treble.
Comfort is another pillar of the RH-5's design, and it matters immensely when you are sitting at your computer for hours. The product data highlights a lightweight construction weighing just 0.19 kg, paired with an over-ear closed-back enclosure. This physical design creates a secure seal that isolates external noise, which is essential when trying to catch subtle details in a recording session. The ear cushions and headband are designed to be comfortable enough for extended wear, but the closed-back nature means you will feel some pressure on your ears compared to open designs. However, for the purpose of monitoring audio playback or playing along with digital drums, this isolation is a feature, not a bug. It ensures that the sound coming from your speakers or audio interface stays where it belongs: inside your head.

However, this headphone has strict limitations regarding connectivity and environment. It is a wired device with a 3.5 mm jack, meaning you must manage cables and potential tangling. The included conversion plug accommodates standard and mini connectors, but the manual explicitly warns users to ensure the jack is pushed all the way in to "click" into place. If the connection is loose or wobbly, the audio will cut out, which is frustrating during a creative flow. Furthermore, there is no mention of water resistance or sweatproofing. You cannot take these to the gym, let alone the pool. They are plastic-encased electronics meant for dry, indoor use. If you are looking for the best Hi-Res headphones for a MacBook setup in a home studio or office, the RH-5 fits that niche perfectly. But if you need wireless freedom or durability against the elements, this model is not the right tool for the job.
The Rhyfell Fit 5 is a radical departure from traditional audio gear because it abandons the ear canal entirely. This is a bone conduction device, meaning it transmits sound vibrations through your cheekbones directly to the inner ear. This technology leaves your ears completely open to ambient sounds, which is a massive safety benefit for runners, cyclists, and swimmers. If you are training outdoors or in a crowded gym, hearing traffic or other people around you is vital. The Rhyfell achieves this with a lightweight frame weighing only 28 grams, constructed from liquid silicone. This material choice is deliberate; it allows the headphones to conform to the head comfortably without slipping, even during high-intensity movements like sprinting or vigorous laps.
The standout feature here is the ability to function independently of your phone. While many wireless headphones require a Bluetooth connection to a mobile device, the Rhyfell includes 32GB of built-in storage. This capacity can hold over 8,000 songs, and the transfer speed is listed as significantly faster than previous generations. This means you can load your entire workout playlist onto the device and leave your phone behind. For a swimmer, this is transformative. The device carries an IP68 waterproof certification, rated for full submersion up to 2-5 meters. You can dive into the pool, put it on MP3 mode, and listen to music underwater without any risk of damage. Traditional Bluetooth signals do not travel well through water, so the reliance on internal storage is a necessary and brilliant engineering solution for aquatic sports.
Battery life is another area where this device aims to dominate the daily routine. The specifications claim 10 hours of continuous playtime, which effectively doubles the industry standard mentioned in similar contexts. This ensures that a single charge covers long marathon training sessions or multiple days of casual use. The charging time is listed as 2 hours, which is reasonable for such a large battery capacity. However, the user experience differs significantly from the Roland. The controls are button-based, requiring tactile interaction rather than touch sensors. The open-ear design also means you will not get the immersive, bass-heavy experience of closed-back headphones. Sound quality is clear for vocals and mid-range frequencies, but the physical separation of the driver from the ear canal changes the perception of sound. If you need the best IPX7 (or higher) waterproof headset for a MacBook or phone while you are active, this is the only logical choice. It bridges the gap between a wearable computer and a sports accessory.
• Best for Audio Fidelity: The Roland RH-5 wins decisively with its 40mm dynamic drivers and 10 Hz–22,000 Hz frequency response, offering a balanced, studio-quality sound profile that the Rhyfell cannot match due to its bone conduction technology.
• Best for Water Sports: The Rhyfell is the undisputed winner here with its IP68 rating and ability to withstand submersion up to 5 meters, whereas the Roland RH-5 has no water resistance and should never be exposed to moisture.
• Best for Wireless Freedom: The Rhyfell offers Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity with zero-delay pairing and a 10-meter range, plus the option of standalone MP3 playback via 32GB internal memory. The Roland RH-5 is strictly wired with a 3.5 mm jack.
• Best for Situational Awareness: The Rhyfell’s open-ear design allows you to hear your surroundings, making it safer for outdoor running and swimming. The Roland RH-5 is closed-back, providing isolation that blocks out the world.
• Best for Long Sessions: Both offer comfort, but the Roland is lighter in total mass (0.19 kg vs 28g), though the Rhyfell’s ergonomic silicone fit may feel more secure during vigorous motion.
• Best for Battery Independence: The Rhyfell allows you to swim without carrying a phone thanks to its 32GB storage, while the Roland requires a constant source device connected via cable.
• Best for Music Production: If you are editing tracks or playing instruments on your laptop, the Roland RH-5 provides the accurate monitoring needed for professional work.
• Best Value for Athletes: For anyone whose primary activity involves sweating, running, or swimming, the Rhyfell offers features that simply do not exist in the Roland category.
In my opinion, if you are primarily looking for the best Hi-Res headphones for a MacBook setup to listen to music, produce tracks, or monitor audio, the Roland RH-5 is the superior investment. Its balanced tone and closed-back design provide the clarity and focus required for serious listening. However, if your priority is staying active, particularly if you swim or run outdoors, the Rhyfell Bone Conduction Swimming is the only viable option. The ability to go phone-free with 32GB of storage and survive full submersion makes it a specialized tool that the Roland simply cannot replicate. I would buy the Roland for my desk and the Rhyfell for my gym bag, as they solve two completely different problems. Do not try to force one to do the job of the other; the result will be disappointment in both scenarios.
Yes, both products connect to a MacBook, but differently. The Roland RH-5 connects via a wired 3.5 mm jack (using the included adapter if needed), while the Rhyfell uses Bluetooth 6.0 for wireless streaming or acts as a standalone MP3 player.
No, the Roland RH-5 is not waterproof and has no water resistance rating. Submerging it or exposing it to heavy sweat could damage the electronics. Only the Rhyfell is certified for swimming with its IP68 rating.
No, the Rhyfell has 32GB of internal storage, allowing you to load over 8,000 songs directly onto the device. You can swim and listen without needing to carry your phone nearby.
The Roland RH-5 likely offers deeper, more impactful bass due to its 40mm dynamic drivers and sealed over-ear design. The Rhyfell uses bone conduction, which prioritizes safety and openness over the deep bass isolation found in traditional headphones.
