Briefly introduce Build Play Learn Labs robotics.
Share excitement about starting a Robotics Team for competitions.
Robotics Leagues (like FIRST LEGO League & VEX IQ)
Students design, build, and program robots to solve real-world challenges.
Competitions include presentations, teamwork, coding, and robot games.
Team Jobs & Roles
Builders: Assemble the robot.
Programmers: Write code in LEGO Spike / Python.
Designers: Create 3D parts & improve robot design.
Drivers: Control the robot during competitions.
Researchers: Work on innovation projects.
Presenters: Share the team’s work with judges.
Benefits of Joining
Learn STEM skills (coding, engineering, teamwork).
Build confidence & leadership.
Meet and compete with other robotics teams.
Prepares for future careers in tech and engineering.
Looks great on college and scholarship applications.
Average costs for robotics teams (you can adjust for your nonprofit):
Team Registration (FIRST LEGO League / VEX IQ): $400–$600
Robot Kit (LEGO Spike Prime or VEX IQ): $400–$550
Extra Parts & Tools: $200–$400
Competition Travel / Fees: $200–$300
➡️ That means $1,200–$1,800 per year per team.
For families, you could set an average team member contribution around $200–$250 per student, payable directly to the nonprofit.
The rest can be covered by fundraising, grants, and sponsors.
Students form small groups.
Build a basic rolling robot with LEGO Spike.
Focus on structure: wheels, base, motor attachment.
Open the Spike App.
Show how to connect the hub.
Program the robot to:
Move forward.
Turn left/right.
Stop on command.
👉 End with a mini-race or obstacle challenge so students can test their roller bots.
Recap what they learned today.
Remind them: “We are not just learning robotics — we are building a team to compete and represent East Palo Alto.”
Share the sign-up process & costs.
Invite families to ask questions about joining the team.
