My name is Sonia Robinson, I am a 12th grader at Hathaway Brown School. I have been attending HB since 8th grade, and I have been part of the robotics team since the 2021-2022 season. I have taken Intro to Ideas, Engineering & Design, and I have been enrolled in the IDEA Capstone Seminar for the past 2 years. Ever since elementary school, I have always had an interest in technology and engineering, and I've gotten hands-on experience through the FIRST Robotics team 2399 and the SREP Program at Hathaway Brown School. Some of my hobbies include Figure Skating, coding, creating and playing video games, and drawing art. I am currently the marketing lead and shirt designer for the 2025 Reefscape Fighting Unicorns merchandise. I am also a co-captain of the figure skating team and I have created a 3D application to teach the basics of quantum mechanics in relation to skyrmions at my lab with Dr Shulei Zhang at Case Western Reserve University.
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a competition in which teams build robots to compete in a new game each year. I have participated in FRC for 4 years, my first year being Rapid React (2022). This year (the 2025 season) was Reefscape, details of which can be seen in the video.
Students compete on Alliances, or 3 robotics teams working together to score points for their team. There are 2 opposing Alliances, Red and Blue. There are 3 separate sections of the game: Autonomous, where robots are self-controlled and drivers cannot touch the controllers; Teleoperated, where the robot drivers are allowed to pick up the controllers and play the game; and endgame, which typically has a specific objective that can be achieved. The focus of my project this year was on the endgame portion in which robots could climb on metal cages suspended by a chain in the "barge zone".
