Project Overview
Major League Baseball (MLB) collaborated with NYU to challenge students with creating an immersive VR experience for baseball fans - both at the stadium and at home. The goal was to enhance fan engagement by leveraging VR technology, offering fans a way to experience the game like never before.
This project was evaluated at a global level, with participants from countries like South Korea, the United States and beyond. My final submission earned a 97% score, and a 4.0 GPA and I finished third overall in a highly competitive class.
Design an engaging VR experience that brings fans closer to the action.
Ensure the experience works seamlessly at both stadium booths and at home.
Incorporate interactive elements that will keep fans engaged even outside of the live game.
As the sole designer and developer I took full ownership of this project - from research to final implementation. This required a holistic approach, balancing user experience, interface and technical development to create a seamless VR interaction.
END-TO-END DEVELOPMENT: Designed and developed the entire VR experience, ensuring both technical feasibility and engaging user interactions.
USER RESEARCH & FAN ENGAGEMENT STUDIES: Conducted research into fan behaviours, preferences and stadium experiences to inform design decisions.
3D UI/UX DESIGN: Created immersive 3D wireframes and interactive elements, ensuring an intuitive and visually understandable interface.
VR DEVELOPMENT & OPTIMISATION: Built and optimised the VR experience to work seamlessly across multiple platforms, including stadium kiosks and home VR setups.
ITERATIVE PROTOTYPING & TESTING: Developed functional prototypes, tested interactions with real users, and refined the experience based on feedback.
The final product was an immersive VR pitching game, designed to engage fans both in stadiums and at home. The experience allowed users to step into the shoes of a pitcher, aiming fro accuracy and speed in a virtual bullpen challenge.
STADIUM EXPERIENCE: The game was designed for large screens and VR kiosks, providing an interactive half-time or pre-game attraction to enhance fan engagement at live MLB events.
HOME VR COMPATIBILITY: To ensure accessibility, the game was optimised for mobile VR, allowing fans to play at home Google Cardboard and other smartphone-based VR headsets.
IMMERSIVE MECHANICS: Levering physics-based interactions, the gameplay delivered realistic pitching mechanics that felt both fun and intuitive.
SCALABLE DESIGN: Built with flexibility in mind, the experience could be expanded to include additional game-modes, difficulty levels and even integration with official MLB events.
The project was highly praised by MLB representatives and lecturers at NYU for its real-world applicability.
Earned a 97% final score and a 4.0 GPA, finishing third overall in an international group of student.
Unfortunately this project could not be displayed since I was unable to be present at the final presentations due to COVID restrictions at the time, not allowing me to fly to NYC.
This project was however selected by MLB representatives as a legitimate option to take further.
My project did not win but this challenge
This project highlights my ability to innovate with emerging technology while delivering high-impact solutions for globally recognised brands. It demonstrates my expertise in UX, UI and immersive technology as well as my capacity to execute a high-profile project independently in a highly competitive environment.
